In Search of a Cheap Vet for Dog Surgery

Over the weekend, I discovered my dog has a huge growth on the back of her front leg. It's about golf ball size. She's an older dog (13-14 years), so we don't want to spend a ton of money to have this thing removed. I took her to her regular vet and she wants $600 to remove it. That's not even sending it out to the lab to have it analyzed for cancer. Since we are right after Christmas, money is a little tight right now. I know vets can very in price from one to the next so just hoping someone has had a similar exp and was a little cheaper. BTW is there such thing as pet health insurance, lol?

What can I do next?

Check with your local humane society. Alot of them have vet care. I have found that Banfield, inside of Petsmart is very resonable. I was a former vet tech. They do add in some extras. Just tell them you want the bare minimum. They offer their own insurance plan, which could save you quite a bit. I was very impressed with the staff (I went to the one in Burnsville, off of 35E and 42)

I switched vets due to cost. This one would be a bit of a drive for you but Robbinsdale pet hospital is good and very cheap. They treat my dogs so well there but it is a no frill place.

We have a 13 year old dog with the same thing. I am taking her in on Wednesday. I will let you know what my vet comes up with. I LOOOOVE our vet and she is very reeasonable and will not do unnecessary procedures. I will let you know what she comes back with for price. I will be honest my hubby and I have decided that our dog is old and if it is something major then just so be it. Right now she does not appear that it is bothering her. She is still running, playing, shaking her tail, eatting and going to the bathroom. So my question is, is it bothering your dog? They do have pet insurance, but like people it is considered a preexisiting condition and at our dog's ages the cost is pretty high. I will let you know what our vet says though.
