If you want to get kids for tutoring, call your local school district and ask to be added to the district list of approved tutors - or what you need to do to be added. I know that our school district (new lenox) has a list of about 25 approved tutors that you can receive if your child needs help. I found a wonderful tutor that way for by sons and have been using her for the past 3 years. Also, try Sylvan or one of those type of places.

As for babysitting in your area, the easiest way to get kids is to get licensed. Once you are licensed, you can be put on a list that prospective parents can request from the State/County. The other thing is again to work with your local school district because they also have an approved district list of daycares that they work with. Not all of them are commercial. If you teach on sundays through your church, put something in your weekly bulletin or monthly family newsletter. Put flyers up at the local grocery stores, preschools and such locations. My friend who has a licensed daycare in her home places an add in the local paper and will usually get anywhere from 3 - 10 responses, which will usually net her 1 - 5 new children.

I feel for you. I was laid off in November and at the time, my fiance was a stay-at-home dad, because I made more than enough money to provide for us, plus he had just had major back surgery a year prior and upon being released to work, he struggled to find a decent job. Health and wealth are very important to me and my fiance, and our main priority is to have time for ourselves and quality time to be at home raising our children and doing family things with them.

I see that you mentioned having no interest in Pampered Chef and one other MLM company, stating that you tried them and they didn't work for you. My question is, what exactly, didn't work? Was it the home parties, or the schleeping product around at all hours of the day and night?

I too, am not a huge fan of home parties, and I actually worked for an MLM years ago, in the mid 90s, after my daughter was born. I hated driving all over the place with a bag of heavy merchandise, coming home late and feeling exhausted. That particular company simply didn't click for me.

But....please read my story. I am a person who actually researched the heck out of the company I am now happily involved with and I am telling you, it has been a blessing. Now, keep in mind, as with everything else, what you put into your business, you get out of your business. There is no such thing as get rich quick and the ONLY way to not make money from this business is to quit!

Here is my story...

I am a mother of two children, ages 13 and 19. I am engaged to a wonderful man with two children, ages 2 and 7. The 7 year old lives with us and I stay at home with her.

I spent my entire life in Corporate America, other than when my 19 year old sone was born, until he turned 2. I had to work and over the years since then, I worked my way up to a Director of Recruiting. I built an awesome career for myself, making well over 6 figures, and then I was suddenly laid off, along with my entire recruiting team that I had built, and almost 100 other employees, last November!

At the time, my fiance was a stay-at-home dad, because he had had major back surgery a year earlier and once released back to work, had a hard time finding a good job in his field. Because of my salary, we were able to have him stay home to take his daughter to school and to pick her up every day.

Within three months of my lay off, we were literally buried in late bills, and although I had been trying desperately to find another job, finding one at the salary I was accustomed to, and adding the fact that I do not have a college degree, I simply was not finding any work! Corporate America had also taken its toll on me, having traveled 90% for my Director position, I was barely ever home. The stress and being undervalued and underpaid for my efforts was ridiculous.

I was introduced to an incredible direct marketing business opportunity right before I was laid off, called MonaVie. I had actually bought the product in October and started drinking it, to help me sleep at night and ease the lower back pain I have experienced since the birth of my son. I started talking about the juice to people, as it was benefitting my health greatly, and people wanted to know where they could get some MonaVie.

I realize that, just as there are poorly run and poorly functioning corporations out there, that there are also good and bad direct marketing companies out there. Sara's previous post does have excellent advice. I would try and advertise your services... Craigslist, bulletins at banks, supermarkets. Always carry a business card with you and when you see an opportunity, hand it out. Try advertising in Moms Clubs newsletters. I'd offer mine but we do not accept outside advertising yet but many do... MOMS Club, MOPS, Twins Groups, PACES, etc. Good luck.

I have a friend taking classes at Ivy Tech and she was in desperate need of a notetaker at the beginning of the semester. I know they haven't filled her need yet. She only needs a notetaker for two classes, but if you had several clients it might be worth the time. I know it's not from home, but at least it would be flexible. I'm not sure what the pay is.
If you want to continue as a home daycare provider, you need to get your name to your local Child Care and Resource Referral. As far as getting more people to tutor, could you contact former clients to let them know you're accepting new clients and ask for referrals? Have you let the school offices in your area know you're available for tutoring?

Also, I know you said no pampered chef, etc, but look into Usborne Books at Home. Yes, we do home parties, but we also have the opportunity to do bookfairs and reading incentive programs with schools. Many consultants focus only on school/preschool/library sales. Since you have a masters in education, the Usborne school/library market might be a good fit for you (and you wouldn't feel like you're pestering your family/friends). I think Sara has great advise to you with how to get kids to tutor or to babysit for. Another way to post an add for childcare is on Craigslist.com. It's free and quite simple - you just go to post an add, community, and childcare. Always be careful when giving out info on this site.
