If you're going to make a powdered sugar frosting which is simple to make, be sure to use real butter, cream & pure vanilla extract. You can't really get a wonderful flavor without them. I'll try to give approximate amounts of each. I go by looks but then I've been baking for 50 yrs.
l stick of sweet cream butter Let soften, then beat; add
3 - 4 c. powdered sugar Mix by hand, then w/beater. Add
3 - 4 Tablespoons boiling water (to cut the raw sugar taste)
Then mix in 1/2 c. cream (NOT whipping cream) If you can't find heavy cream use 1/2 & 1/2 or light cream. Add:
1 tsp. vanilla & dash of salt If you want chocolate frosting, add 1/2 c. powdered cocoa along with the p.sugar.
You may need to add more cream, just keep adding a little at a time till it is of spreading consistency. As it sits it will harden, so add more liquid if needed. If you are going to sprinkle little candies or whatever on top, make sure the frosting is moist enough. The sprinkles will fall right off if it's too hard. Just add more cream. If it gets too hard, add more p. sugar. It's really very easy. And it is very delicious!! As with most cooking, everything depends on the ingredients. Always use butter & cream & real vanilla. Then, you can't go wrong.

Hi!
Decorator icing is:

1 pkg. Crisco shortening (less one finger width)(You can substitute all or part of this with butter, but if you're using a piping bag, it's better to use a mostly shortening recipe...
1 pkg. icing sugar
1/2 cup water
1 tsp. vanilla

Use a stand mixer if you have one to mix it up. Mix shortening, water, and a bit of the sugar first to smooth it out... add the rest of the sugar slowly.

I have used powdered sugar and milk, but for cookies. When I make cupcakes for a party or even just for home, I like to buy Dream Whip. It comes in powdered form and there is a recipe on th ebox. I usually use a package of white chocolate pudding mix but you can use other flavors like banana. Using a white chocolate would allow you to color the frosting orange. Since you would use milk though, they would have to be refrigerated until you leave for the party.
