hello everyone!!this is kind of lenghty sorry....on monday my daughter who is 5 yrs old had an appt and after her check up they told me she needed 1 tooth to be capped and 2 fillings(she still has her baby teeth).then the nurse gave me a prescription for her to take 5mg valium tablet 30 min before her surgery.her having to take a valium didnt set right with me so i called my mother and she said 5mg is alot for a child.i called my father who is a pharmacist and my daughter's pediatrician and even they both said that is a high does.i called the nurse back and asked her if i can get a lesser dose bc i was told that was too high of a dose for her.she said they give that dose for when the child comes in the are relaxed and not all scared and nervous especially if they are needing major work done.she did change the dose to 2mg but told me is the medicine doesnt get her to where she needs to be then i will have to reschedule.i told her that was fine i want to see how she does with the 2mg and if i have to reschedule atleast i know how she will do with the 5mg.well alot of my friends have said they have never had to give thier kids anything before a procedure if anything they just tie them down...so i am going to get a second opinion on tuesday from another dentist.this dentist does not believe in putting caps on a child bc all that does is rotts the childs tooth and possible mess up the incoming tooth.so i am praying really hard i make the right decision bc whether i get it capped or not i dont want my daughter to get an infection and be in pain later down the line....thanks in advance for any advice i am given....

is she in any pain? to me it seems a waste of time to cap and fill teeth that will be gone in a year.
i had a bad experience with a dentist in college station who wanted to sedate me to clean my teeth!, if it sounds fishy to you it usually is - my dentist is mike freeman of the woodlands dental group - he is 100% trustworthy, my parents in law have been going to him for 30 years and he takes all insurance

Wow! Getting more opinions and explanations is definitely a good idea.

I know children respond to medication in their unique way. My oldest, at the age of 4, had four fillings. Our dentist was able to do them (the back molars) without any medication. I was amazed and delighted that they were able to have him be quiet for a while and be confident and okay with the work they needed to do!

I have two other sons who had to have fillings and caps. I got them to the dentist earlier than 4-yrs-old (especially when the youngest wouldn't open his mouth for me!).

I felt the dentist gave me some good advice and explained what exactly he was going to do in such a way that I understood and agreed with.

Personally, I can't stand those who promote the child restraints.

I believe the cap on a baby tooth (or is it a permanent tooth?) is an okay idea because of teeth spacing. I already have orthodontist bills, so I appreciate now the caps my children have had so the teeth alignment and spacing corrections have not been so bad.

Good luck!

When we first brought my daughter home, she was adopted at 2 yrs 10 months from Guatemala, her teeth were so bad we had not choice but to take her to the dentist and spend lots of money just to get the rot out of her mouth. She had to have 5 extractions 3 caps and 1 filling and 2 spacers and when she went in to have it done they found she actually had an abcess too! We knew her teeth were bad we could see that but we had no idea how bad. And she never onfce said her mouth he=urt or teeth hurt. She ate and talked and everything just fine. After we had it all done, which they sedated her for it to get it all done at once, 3 hours is a long time to a toddler, we knew right away what a difference it made in her feeling good. She had never known how to not hurt in her teeth. She didn't know such a thing existed. All of that was back in July 07' Now just recently I took her in because she needed a check up and she was starting kindergarten. She had one more cap needed and one of her spacers had fallen out. This particular dentist didn't sedate her but gave her some laughing gas and I stayed with her the whole time and although she cried a little bit just talking to her and keeping her calm worked just fine. She still talks about not liking the "pokey things" in her teeth. But considering that was only her 2nd time at a detist in her life she did just fine. I can't imagine that a dentist would want to drug your child just for a cap and filling. Seems pretty extreme to me, personally. ANd I would think the child restraints would be traumatizing. But just to be able to hold your hand and hear your voice when the work is being done should be enough.

FYW my daughter is legally blind and only has periferal vision in her right eye. So I would think any procedure would be more scary not being able to see. So if she can do it I'm sure your kiddo can too... GOOD lUCK

If you dont feel comfortable then dont take her there. Definetly call for a second or even third opinion. To me that doesnt sound right. When I was little I had to have my four bottom teeth pulled and all they did was numb my gumbs with an anteseptic and the a local shot in my mouth and that was it. they pulled out all 4 very quickly. good luck and God bless. I will keep your little one in my prayers that everything goes well.
