I Have So Many Weeds in My Sandbox

The best way is to get out the sand and lay a lining of weedblock down, so they cannot take root. They won't in the sand but if there is soil or dirt under the sand that is where they come from. Weed block is safe, easy to use and you can get a roll fairly inexpensive. If you don't want to do that much work, then try spraying them with vinagar.

There probably isn't much you can do this year but for next there is. We use water softener salt in the spring. Get the cubes and put it in the sand box. As they disolve in the spring it makes the ground too salty for stuff to grow. We use this in the gravel areas such as drive ways and such. Much cheaper then week killer and much safter. You can even apply them it in late winter and let the snow and rain help disolve it.

I don't know how big your sandbox is, or how hard this might be, but you should consider taking the sand back out and placing the garden or landscaping plastic sheets down to line the bottom of the box. Then replace the sand. It should help with some of them, but others that start growing just from the sand itself you'll just have to pull. Also, try to keep it dry as much as possible. Weeds can't grow where there's no water. Good luck.

S., this is very simple when you put the sandbox in,
now it will take a little work to make it, but here is what needs to be done, and you will have NOT ONE weed forever anymore:
UNDER THE SAND< ON THE GROUND,
yo7u need to place a PLASTIC COVER, like a big plastic garbage bags, to cover ALL the soil under the sand.

As you already have sand in, I'd suggest you shovel all the sand from one side to another side of the sandbox,
and then place a plastic film there,
then shovel all the sand on the side where you already have a plastic film, and cover the second side of the soil unbder the sand in the sand box, with the plastic, and even the sand out so that it is everywhere like a sandbox again.

Maybe start over? What we did was put in railroad toes for a box. Then I stappled pond plastic liner to the sides. The filled with sand. Latstly, we made a cover out of a tarp and 2 by 4s. It has been weed free for two years. It hink it is the cover...also, the cats can't go in it.

Get some of the weed fabric at Costco to put under the sand. It is a pain to move all the sand and put it down, but so worth it. We forgot to do it when we put our wood chips down around our swingset, but got sick of pulling the weeds so we step-by-step moved the chips, put down the fabric, then re-spread the wood chips. Haven't had weeds since!

This would be a ton of work, but it would be worth it in the end. You can take the sand out of the sand box (I know that sounds crazy), spray the ground, and then put thick plastic down on the bottom of the sand box and refill. I am not sure where your weeds are originating from, but it could be the sand that's the problem. If that is the case you may want to get new sand.

I agree with the others that suggested you redo it and place a good weed barrier underneath. Pond liner is the best because NOTHING can get through that rubber/vinyl, whereas some weeds can actually grow through the thin weed barriers that you normally find at the stores.

Go to the hardware store purchase an "acion hoe" it slides just under the surface clipping the roots of the weeds. They dry up, no eyesore or jungle. PRESTO! problem solved

I read all the responces and have one thing to add. You need to cover the sandbox when you are not using it to keep stray animals out, especially cats. They can carry diseases that can be very harmful to your little boy. That will also help with the weeds.

It would be a good idea to line it, meanwhile cover it up whenever it is not being used - preferrably with something that will smash the weeds, but either way if they are not getting sunlight, it will help deter growth.
