Hi C.~

I would tell him hes a big boy now and you need to give to the new babies . Or soemthing like that. I know its tough. we went through the breaking of the pacifer. I told her the birdies took it away to give to the new babies that needed them. At 2 1/2 they should be able to understand. I know thats how old my dd was and she was fine. Good LUck

Oh another thing is to put something in it that he doesnt like to drink.. then he wont drink it.

does he just want the bottle or does he want milk or juice in it? If he wants something other than water then switch to water and maybe he will just not be interested. If he takes it with water then just take it away cold turkey. It will be so hard. I know from experience. But it will be so worth it. Be strong!!!

With my son, we made a big deal about no more bottles and went out to buy some sippy cups. We let him pick out a couple of his favorite character sippy cups. When we got home, we threw away the nipples to the bottles (although I hid 2 away just in case of uncontrollable sobs) and we washed the new cups. Then at night we let him have the sippy. He isn't able to sit there and drink it continuously like a bottle and once he is asleep he is done for the night. He still uses the sippy at night (it's been about 4 months) but he uses it less and less. Also, we've switched off of milk at night. He has either flavored water, a little apple juice, or some plain water. While we are still using it, he is drinking less each time and some nights doesn't have one at all.

Hope this helps and good luck with your little guy.

My kids were never bottle-fed, but by 1 year, my oldest would often sleep with a sippy cup. Have you tried a sippy cup w/ water in it instead?

My ped told me to transition to a sippy cup at 9 months. I did and they were able to be off the bottle by 12.5 months. But I never gave them one for bed.

only put water in it then each sleep time take it away...start off with no baba at nap time then move up to night time.

my son would ONLY go to bed with a bottle....at 18 months, his ped. said to take him off it..cold turkey..i dont know why i listened to him...but i did..it was horrible...it may be easier for another child but with my son he would scream in his crib for two hours at bedtime(vomit and burst blood vessels in his eyes)then fall asleep from sheer exhaustion and then do the same thing for another two hours one or two more times each night..after about three or four weeks it got alot better...but it was hell..although, my son never slept through the night even before that..he would scream every couple hours and the only thing that would quiet him was a bottle...i have read to gradually make the milk(or whatever your putting in the bottle)more and more diluted...till finally its just water..and most kids wont even want it then...i dont like the letting them cry it out method(at least not for my son)but i believe it could work for a more laid back child...now(hes 4) my son has to have a bottle of water by his bed because whenever he wakes up during the night he takes a drink..perhaps if your son had water(in something that wouldnt spill)near him in bed it would help him wean off the bottle..hope this helps...good luck..R.

With my son and daughter, about 2 weeks before I started "prepping them". "In 14 days, we're going to switch your bottle to a sippy cup of water", in 10 days, we're going to switch your bottle to a sippy cup of water. Then when I made the switch, I switched both the drink (milk to water)and the holder (bottle to sippy). I did this at about 1 year of age for both of my kids so it may be a bit tougher since your son is older now. Stick to your guns and talk about the "sugar monsters" on his teeth...that also helps when my youngest (also 2) needs to brush his teeth and not have anything but water afterwards.
As I'm sure you are aware, it definitely needs to happen sooner rather than later because the part about the "sugar monsters" on the teeth is true. Having the sugar from the milk sit all night on his teeth can really rot his teeth and gums. I am good friends with a pediatric dentist and he is a big proponent of no bottle to bed.
Good luck!

Try giving him a Nuby cup with water in it. It's still kind of like a bottle, and it's better than trying to take away the bottle cold-turkey. When I decided to take away the bottle, I made sure it coincided with some sort of holiday like Christmas or Easter, and told my child the Easter bunny was going to leave a basket of candy, but she had to give him her baba in return. It worked like a charm. Also then, in your child's mind, it wasn't you who took away the bottle, they traded it. Good Luck.
