My almost four month old has began teething and has been really for about two weeks. i can feel two big old bumbs under her gums and she loves to have them massaged. It seems to bother her way worse during the night. I've read great reviews about Highland Teething Tablets...was so excited and called my Ped office and they don't know about them and typically don't recomend anything homeopathic. They suggested Tylenol...which I don't mind doing...but she is needing something almost every night and that seems like a lot of Tylenol even though they said it was fine. Has anyone else experienced this...what works????

What can I do next?

I tried them, and didn't really notice a difference. I know lots of moms use them, but we really got no results from them. I am guilty of the *almost* nightly Tylenol dose. I worked in pediatrics for a while and it is very hard to overdose on Tylenol (it is possible though). As long as it is given in the correct dosage, it is safe.

Hyland's products are great! I even give Hyland's teething tablets to my older children when they are uncomfortable while losing teeth. They can tell me that it does work! I use the other Hyland's products too -- colic for babies, and the colds and sniffles when the kids are sick (especially with the recommendation not to give OTC cold meds to kids), and calms forte for me to help me fall asleep when my mind is racing with all the things I need to do!

hi A.,
hyland's are great and i would use them before tylenol anyday. i would also question my ped if he/she would prefer giving tylenol daily instead of something with no known side effects. i wish these peds would get up to date with the available alternative medicines.

Hi A.,
I have 3 children ranging between 3 and 12 yrs of age. I have always used Hylands Products for my children, and we have not only a pediatrician for our kids but also a homeopathic Dr that we take them to. I also work from home for a Wellness Company helping to educate parents on using more natural everyday products in their homes.

Hylands Teething tablets can be used at any age, just follow the directions on the bottle...I believe for those it is 3 tablets every 15 minutes until pain is soothed. The teething tablets actually have a natural ingredient that helps to calm babies and you may find that she falls asleep after a few doses....LOL which sounds like you need that! They also have Calms Forte for kids which helps kids fall asleep naturally...can be used on babies as well. We used it on my 3 yr old to help her ease into a sleep/bedtime schedule starting at 18 months when she started sleeping in her own big girl bed rather than letting her scream herself to sleep. (they make Calms Forte for Moms too!)I have used the Colic Tablets for babies ( A LIFESAVER!) I have recently found that I love their newest product "Sniffles & Sneezes for Colds", especially with it being winter...We all worry about those runny noses and there is so much information out now about over the counter cold medicines being dangerous for kids and really have no affect on children, there fore we end up medicating them for no reason. So far with my kids it has worked great!

Regarding your Dr...Its not that your Drs or nurses are against anything natural or homeopathic...its just that their offices alot of times are representing pharmaceutical companies and therefore are restricted to what they can recommend . They also are taught in school and national meetings etc that prescriptions are best or over the counter meds manufactured by those pharmaceutical companies.

Remember...you are your childs mother and YOU know best...go with your natural instincts, do research on things before just accepting answers to situations.

I hope I have helped you, please let me know if I can help you any further.

I would never give my baby that much Tylenol! Homeopathics are always safe, in fact you can never "overdose." Your mommy insticts are right, that is BAD advise! Sometimes when we ask doctors about something they don't know anything about they want to give us an answer without admitting they don't really know. Then, they give the wrong answer wanting to "play it safe." In this situation, the safest thing is the homeopathic teething tablets. I've seen research corelating early Tylenol use to later problems, I would reserve that for something else....

We used the teething tablets for our daughter and they worked great!! I felt much better giving her the tablets versus constant doses of tylenol or motrin. We had no side effects. They apparently taste pretty good - I never tried them to see - when my dd was about 18months she climbed up and got the bottle down and helped herself. I called poison control just in case because I didn't know how much she had ingested and they told me not to worry - even if she had downed half the bottle they would just make her mellow and maybe sleepy.
Good luck with the teething!!!

Hylands products are great and I swear by the teething tablets.

Here are the ingredients as those were being questions by other posters.
Calcarea Phosphorica 3X HPUS - supports dentition
Chamomilla 3X HPUS - for irritability
Coffea Cruda 3X HPUS - for wakefulness and diuresis
Belladonna 3X HPUS (0.0003% Alkaloids) - for redness and inflammation
In a base of Lactose (milk sugar) NF

There is NO caffiene in them, I'm not sure where the PP got that from. You can google the Homeopathic uses for each of the ingredients and then decide for yourself if this is right for your family.

My girls have been teething for months now and we have been using the teething tablets and I swear by them. Before we started I talked to their Ped about it and she said they were safe. In the beginning they seemed to work well and then I found myself questioning whether they really did the trick or not. We ran out of them and I didn't get ahy for a couple days. Trust me, during those couple days I truly learned that THEY DO HELP. When times are really bad I do use oralgel and Tylonel, but we rely mostly on the teething tablets. I recommend them 100%.

Good luck!!

Most pediatricians seem leery of homeopathic remedies, but is giving a baby Tylenol on a regular basis any better? I can't imagine it is. We use Hyland's Kids Kit (esp. good is the Chamomilla for fussiness, etc.) and the teething tabs as well. They seem to help take the edge off. There are also things you can do for teething, like putting a wet washcloth in the fridge or freezer and letting her chew on them, and of course all the teething things on the market. My baby seemed to like to chew on (BPA-free) plastic links as well as any of the nicer teething things I got for her (like the maple teething ring at Nova Natural online.)

You have to decide what's best for your baby, and certainly pediatricians know a lot, but most don't usually know much about homeopathy, and they tend not to trust it if they didn't study it in med school. I'm not sure where you live, but there's a really good , holistic chiropractor in Centerville, April Dunnington, and she has been really helpful for us in terms of what is good for the baby, talking about developmental stuff and diet and everything. She is great at looking at the whole health picture, not just one or another symptom. Her number is ###-###-####. She works on babies and adults. She's been more helpful to us than our pediatrician.

Good luck!

we have great luck using the teething tablets, it is the only thing that will soothe my 22 month old when he is teething, he cries for 4 hours wretching and screaming if we just use tylonol and advil. We give him the teething tablets (we found them at kroger in lebanon finally) and he sleeps all night. They are safe and natural. Our midwives recommended them and do much study in homeopathic medicine.

I used teething tablets (not sure if they were Hyland or not) once with my first daughter. Then I spoke to our pediatrician and she told me that she was not a big fan of them. Teething tablets contain a substance called Belladonna, which in large concentration can have the same effects as a barbiturate. Granted, the concentration in teething tablets is so miniscule, your child would have to take about 6 bottles' worth at one time to have that kind of effect. They definitely work as far as comforting a teething baby, though. Talk to your pediatrician, though, if you have any doubts. Different doctors have different opinions and mine tended to err on the side of caution. Good luck!

They are ok. There's not much to them really. The main calming ingredients in them are camomille (sp?) and coffee. And they are a milk sugar base. I bought some at Wal-Mart for like 4 or 5 dollars. So, they may be worth trying. To be honest though, it varies from kid to kid. My friend had great success calming her little one with the tablets when she was teething, but they didn't do much for my little guys. It does say on the bottle to ask your doc before giving them. So, you may just stick with what he/she says. Tylenol every 4 hrs, but don't stop if she seems to feel better, keep it steady for a few days, but ask your doc about that too, that's what my doc told me to do, but every circumstance is different. Good Luck.

If she can take motrin or advil (ibuprofen), then I'd try that because it lasts longer than tylenol.

The other thing I'd try is the "baby orajel swabs". (They'll help releive the pain until the tylenol or ibuprofen kicks in.) One end snaps off and then the "medicine" will drain into the other end of the swab, then you can swab where the teeth are budding. My two year old would clamp down on it with her gums and suck the medicine out of it!

Good luck!

My son was a major nighttime teether. I wanted to go the homeopathic route, but the Hylands didn't really seem to do anything for him. I used acetaminophen (Tylenol) for him every night when he was going through his teething spurts - sometimes 2 wks at a time. He had no adverse affects from it and it did help him sleep a little better.
You just have to do what you feel comfortable with. (And what you can tolerate at night!) It wouldn't hurt to give the Hylands a try first. If it works, that's great. If not, try something else.
Good luck!!

My daughter was 5 months old when she started teething and we were away from home! A kind women told us about homeopathic teething tablets at Whole Foods, well we found them! She was crying for an hour, poor thing, and as soon as we gave her the tablet she quieted down and fell asleep within 3 min! She is almost 8yrs now, no damage done - ha ha. My dr. had not heard of them either. Whole foods usually has someone on staff if you have any questions to ask them about it.

our ped actually recommended those chill toys that you keep in the fridge...they worked great. too much tylenol or motrin will just cause addiction and those tablets are a waste of money (and aren't recommended by dr's b/c they aren't approved by the fda). My son started teething around 3 months but as long as he had something to chew on, he was fine. i know it's hard but i think it's more or less needing to be soothed. i know a lot of people that go the route w/a pain relieving meds and now their kids won't sleep w/out it. not trying to BS you or scare you but i think just use your best judgement. good luck. teething goes on till almost age 2 so that'd be a lot of tylenol in their system.

I would use the homeopathic remedy over Tylenol always. I am in the health and wellness industry and in researching some of these over the counter aids....there are still side effects when used over a long period of time. I would not put my little baby on tylenol every night. There is also a Bach Remedy out there called Rescue Remedy and you mix it with purified water and it will certainly help your little one with no harm. Find a good supplement/vitamin asap for you little one. Good Luck S.

It sounds like a lot of people reccomend the hylands teething tablets... wish i would have known sooner! :) We did end up using a lot of tylenol with my little boy. It seemed like the last day or two before the tooth finally popped through he was in a lot of pain and we would give him tylenol when we felt he needed it (but not less than four hours apart). One thing I've heard is be careful with orajel. It reduces their gagging reflux and they could possibly choke.
Hope you find something that successfully works to soothe your little girl!

Yes, get the Hyland's teething tablets!! They are perfectly safe, much safer than Tylenol. Traditional doctors just aren't trained in homeopathics and can't recommend them because they don't know anything about them. You can just pop a couple of the tablets in your baby's mouth when she wakes up
at night. I always nursed my baby back to sleep, too, as this is so comforting. Good luck!

I've had some success with the Hylands. I believe in taking the path of least resistance....a bottle of the stuff is like 5 bucks, and if it doesn't work, no harm done, move on to the Tylenol. I think Tylenol is fairly benign as well, but it is definitely more chemical than the homeopathic route. Try it! If nothing else, they are a bit sweet so your daughter will at least like the taste. Good luck!

I believe you can get the Hyland Teething biscuits at Whole Foods!! I have heard great things about them too. My BF's little boy used them. She also used an amethyst teething bangle. Let's face it, when you're dealing with a baby, natural remedies are much preferable to drugs, when possible. Ofcourse, if the pains too intense, Infant Tylenol might be the only way to go. Hylands are awesome. I have used them w/both my girls. Hylands teething tablets were recommended to me by my pediatrician in Seattle (w/a 2nd recommendation from my naturopath), where we were living when #1 was born. Unfortunately, docs around here aren't really up to date on the safety of homeopathics. I agree w/you that it's uncomfortable to think of the possibility of having to drug your kid every night. I think too many docs see Tylenol as a benign substance, but really it's not. Good luck to you.

Dear A.,

I have used several of the Hyland products myself, and I've even given them to my animals.

Hyland is a good company with a reputation for producing quality products, so I wold suggest that you try to Hyland Teething tablets according to the directions. Be sure to give them to your daughter a few hours after any medication has worn off so you can be sure it's the Hyland tablets that are working, and not something else (if they do work for you).

I see an M.D. who takes a more natural approach to treatment. She began her medical career as a pediatrician who specialized in treating children with learning, behavioral, and developmental disabilities. She didn't like the levels of prescription medication that the traditional medical community suggested, so she decided to take a more natural approach with her patients, and it was marvelous to see how well they responded (I worked for her for a while long before I actually followed her advice - lol).

She now has a family practice as an Integrative M.D., which means that she is an M.D., and she uses medication when it's called for, but she generally takes a more holistic approach, using diet and supplements to treat her patients.

You can ask your local health Food Store if they can recommend an Interactive M.D. in you area, and you might just find a great new doctor for the whole family!
