Humane Society Ethics?

I just got an email from one of my news groups and was shocked and heart broken that they do this? Does anyone know if it goes on at all humand societies or are some better? If you don't want to click on the link, it's saying that the animals are put into a gas chamber rather than an injection. After reading it, I feel very sad and it breaks my heart especially close to me after bringing in two cats last week to be euthanized for old age.

I just want to say that for those of you who think this is associated with the Humane Society of the United States, it's not. HSUS is a non-profit, most of whose money goes to the pockets of it's executives (only 1% of HSUS net profits are actually donated to actual shelters who are actually rescuing/saving pets).

Please realize that there are not enough shelters and funds to care for all the unwanted animals. The gas chamber, which sad and horrifying, it still probably a better and kinder end to their lives than a life of starvation and/or being hit by a car.

Very few shelters do this and they are not tied with the Humane Society, and fortunately, it is becoming a law to stop it altogether.

Unfortunately, this falls into the hands of the people who don't take care of their pets, don't rescue adopt, keep breeding and selling on the side of the roads, let their animals stray around, and get rid of them quickly when they are too busy to train their pets. Rescues and shelters have very little funds and can't give every animal a happy ending, and I suppose the gas is cheaper than the injection. I have volunteered and worked at several and it's sad to see so many brilliant animals have to die, but it's true, because frankly, people don't care.

I've held animals being injected, it literally takes about 5 seconds for them to die. When I hold the animal, I make sure it's comfortable, that it's last few moments are warm, because so many of them have been neglected and dumped off.

I used to get puppies when I needed a dog. My last two dogs came from animal shelters. The shelters had them house broken and all their shots. The license fee was included in the price.

Both dogs were about a year old. When my current dog dies, I'll go back to a shelter for my next dog. I saved both these dogs from being put down. I know its not much, but I'll never buy a dog from a puppy mill or pet store, and I never have.

Not having to house break a dog is a valuable benefit. And getting the dogs when they are about a year old prevents me from being surprised by the size a dog will get. (I got a puppy from an airdale mother and an unknown father. It looked like it was going to be the airdale's size or maybe smaller. The father must have been a collie and ended up being three times as big as I wanted and he lived for 13 years. )

Glad to have even a small impact on the shelter over crowding and I alway recommend a shelter dog to those looking to get a pet.

Every time I hear "gas chamber" I think Auschwitz and other death camps. One thing, along with nuclear weapons, that should never have been invented and should have been gotten rid of altogether. I'd take euthanasia over this any day!

Tulsa does euthanasia and I think Monroe does too.

I don't know.....I believe in Fairfax County - they use the injection....

I dont believe this goes on at all humane societies no. I think that the one we have does the injection still.

That is awful if that is what they are doing to those poor animals :(
Are you sure that the information is true, and not what they think is going on?

Should call the H.S. and ask them and see what they have to say. If you feel strongly about it, then you could always get something going with others who feel the same.

Sadly some do. There is a county in southern NM that used the gas chamber until last summer when I think it became state law here in NM that it could no longer be used.
