I was told if you did not request for your tubes to be cut & burned that the dr just tied them. I know my dr. No longer is in my area. I haive been checking on reversal of my tube. But what i read so far did not match how my tube were tied .i had it done 2005 after my son i was awake and the blew up my belly with the gas but only one little cut made in my belly butten. Took about 15 to 20 min.
Thanks L.

What can I do next?

I don't think they could cut/cauterize with just one incision but I don't know. I have two incisions (belly button and pubic hair area) and I have talked to a couple of doctors about having mine done and they said it doesn't really matter whether it was cauterized or not, just how much tube they removed (if any) and how much is left to re-attach. I had mine done in 1995 and I'm going to have mine reversed later this year (hopefully).

Have you contacted the hospital for a copy of your medical records? That would be the place to start. If your doctor is still practicing, it wouldn't be so hard to track him/her down...but they don't likely have a copy of your records.

I am a physician (cardiology), but not an OBGYN, so take this with a grain of salt. You probably had your tubes ligated (which is a cut and burn). They don't really "tie" your tubes.....they frequently do it after birth becuase the uterus/tubes is bigger and easier to get to and they frequently do it laparascopically (which involves blowing up your belly with gas).

Any OBGYN should be able to interpret your surgical report if you get it from the hospital.

If your dr left and his practice or partners stayed they should have your medical records. You might also check with the hospital you had it done even if it was an outpatient procedure.

Yep, request a copy of your medical records but know that you will have to pay if you request it. You might be able to get around the fee if your new doctor requests the copies. Often times the hospitals don't charge the doctor's office but will charge the patient if they make the request directly.

I don't know about the issue of having to request having your tubes cut and burnt versus just cut, but for my tubal, the dr. cut and burnt and didn't tell me there was even a choice. I had no idea there were different methods myself until I began researching reversals and regretting the tubal ligation with every fiber of my being. It makes me sad that there is another one of us here who has regrets over it and wants to reverse it. Just makes me feel even more that women should be counseled before having a TL, or that they should not be allowed under a certain age, or something.

Anyway, back to your question - I requested a copy of my medical records a few months ago and they were sent to me free of charge. No dr. wants to be sued for negligence if a woman has a TL and then gets pregnant and is not happy about that, so many do end up cutting and cauterizing, or burning the ends so they cannot be fused back together. Just another thing I learned after mine that I wish I had known before!

Good luck to you - my TL is basically irreversible so we are going to IVF this summer. I hope you can get yours successfully reversed!

Have you checked with your current Dr. to find out if the method used is recorded in your medical files? I think that's where I'd start. Also, perhaps if you describe to the Dr. what you know of what happened at that time, the Dr. will be able to have at least an "educated guess" as to what was done.

L., get a copy of your medical records and you will have the exact information. Even if the information is in storage they can retreave it. I have pulled information on my husbands that was 20 years old wo any problem.
