How to Slow down One Year Olds Eating

My daughter eats really fast... I give her a couple pieces at a time to slow her down a little but she will shove both in her mouth and signal for more while chewing. I try one piece at a time and feeding her on a fork but both just agrivate her. Any ideas on what to do? I dont want her to choke or continue this habit into the coming years.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responces. One of you put it perfectly, this is just a faze. I realized that I just really needed some reasurance that this wasnt going to ruin her life... So overdramatic when you dont sleep. I've decided to keep on doing what I have been. Drinks and a few bites at a time. Making faces while she eats slows her down too, so I do that when she gets really going. I appreciate the support. It was really helpful to have this sight and be able to hear that none of us are alone and that all of us have the same fears and frustrations. Its nice that we are all here for eachother and willing to step in and help. Its nice that people care so much about others. Thak you

I would continue doing what you are doing. Give her one piece at a time. Tell her once she finishes chewing she may have more. Also encourage her to drink in between bites and encourage her to take her time. Even having a conversation with her may help to slow her down. Good luck. : )

Hi T.,
As a mom of 6, soon to be 7, I can relate with this struggle. I can't stand this particular stage, but let me reassure you that it is just a stage. Honestly, I have pretty much given up trying to break them of it, because it just creates misery for them, and is too much work with too little results for me. I learned the heimlich, and I make sure I never leave the room when they are eating, and that their food is cut into very small pieces. Other than that, I let them be. They have all grown out of it, and eat "normally" now. They're starting that fight for independence at this age, so I let them have it, and just keep an eye on them. Have fun! :)

Hi Tara,
Maybe you could start off the meal with something soft like mooshy spaghetti Os or mashed potatoes or something else that your baby is less likely to choke on. Once she fills her tummy up, she may not be as hungry...hopefully she'll slow down and just munch on the rest. Lori L.

I cant say too much to help my son is the same way i spoon out his food on to the highchair tray and tell him to finish what he has in his mouth first and hopefully it will catch on. I think if he had it his way he would put it all in his mouth at one time. I offer his milk in between to help, im always so afraid he will choke, good luck let me know if you find something that works

I agree 100% with Colleen F. My son is 16 months and eats like your child. Shoves the food in his mouth & signals for more while still chewing. Just cut the food into small pieces, never leave the room while they are eating and learn the heimlich and CPR even! Luckily I have never had to use either. If I try & slow him down he gets mad and he needs to learn to feed himself anyway at this point. Good luck!!

Maybe try alternating bites with sips of water/milk?
