I know this forum is intended for questions about our children, but I have to ask one about my dog. We have an 8 year old Bichon that weighs about 17 pounds. Tonight at our superbowl party, she snatched a chicken wing from the hand of one of the kids and gulped it down, bone and all. Do we need to head to the emergency vet? She didn't chew it - swallowed it whole.
Anyone with any experience in this?
I would definitely go to the vet. If the bone splinters, could perforate intestines,also could be very painful trying to pass a bone. Good luck!

I would say yes!! Or you could make her vomit it back up...you need a syringe (such as one that comes with children's motrin) and a bottle of peroxide. You're going to need another person to help you hold the dog still. You need to force as much peroxide as you can into her until she vomits. It will most likely be foamy white stuff that comes up, but the chicken wing should come up too. I have a friend who's Boxer swallowed a chicken wing whole and those were the instructions given by the Vet when called.

My Boston Terrier did that a few years ago with a rib bone. She never had any trouble. She never got sick or anything. I think their stomach acid is designed to break down bones...I mean they wouldn't have someone rush them to the vet if they did that out in the wild. I don't think their would be any problems but go with your instinct.
If you can confine the dog to a bathroom or other tile floored area, give the dog about a tablespoon of mineral oil and wait for it to pass. If it doesn't pass in a day or so, call your vet. The problem with chicken bones is that they splinter. If it was swallowed, that problem won't exist.
Our lab puppies ate the shingles off a double dog house and this was our vet's advice.

Our golden retriever (which is much bigger than your little pooch) swallowed a whole popsicycle stick one time. We took him to the vet and they pumped him full of mineral oil which helps it slide on out the backside. It was a beautiful sight, standing in the back yard watching him go potty and there it slid out in the whole! Yay! So I second the mineral oil but I would take him in to let the vet do it.....that is, if he hasn't thrown it up already this morning, which I hope he has so you don't have to worry. The mineral oil was a great way to rid the stick but very, very messy poop for about 3 days so you have to wipe them before they can come back in the house....I hope that none of you are in the middle of making breakfast right now :)

You could get lucky but chicken bones splinter and can do alot of damage to the dog's insides.....I would have mine to the vet first thing for an xray and anything else needed.........I was very clear to the teens that were here yesterday for the Super Bowl - make sure the dogs do not get any bones! I hope your furbaby is ok....
I would call a vet to be sure, but it is my understanding the biggest concern over dogs and chicken bones is the splintering and lodging in their throat. If I went down whole there are no splinters to worry about. The the stomach acids will disolve and pass normally. I don't think trying to get it to come back up is worth the trauma to the dog and your hassle. Just watch him over the next few days to make sure he doesn't bite at his sides as if he is in pain and doesn't struggle with bowel movements showing an impaction.
First off, let me say you are not a negligent mom. :)
When these little guys want something, they don't hesitate and are quick as lightening.
Second-as a vet tech, I have seen this many, many times. If you want to be proactive, yes, take him in for an x-ray. But, if you'd rather, wait, just watch him and if there is any vomitting, or constipation, then take him in as there is a problem.
The problem with taking him in too soon is that all you'll know is that there is the wing in there. X-rays can only show that, not whether it's moving through yet.
But, by now you should be able to tell if it's stuck or if it's moving on through.

Our dog did the same thing yesterday, so don't feel bad or like you are the only one this happens too:) She threw it up this morning before she could even get down the stairs to go outside and she's fine now. I however was not impressed to have to clean the stairs while trying to get the kids ready for school!
You should probably give your vet a call, but dogs were made to eat stuff like that. If he didn't chew it, then it's less likely to poke him and cause him trouble. Obviously, I'm not a vet, just my thoughts! :-) Good luck.
Thw problem with dogs and chicken is the bones splinter when they chew them and get stuck in there throat. So if it when down whole she should be good.
Depending on the size of the bone and the size of the dog. I would call your vet and ask what to look for. Not eating, constipation, lethargy. You will also want to make sure you have emergency vet info. Blockages are very serious.
