HORRID Diaper Rash!

HELP! My daughter gets HORRID diaper rash when she teeths. (My sister and I both had this problem as well, per my mom) One poppy diaper can literally eat her skin and leave her with welts and blisters. We have been using Triple Paste and that seems to do a decent job in helping to clear it up.

Have any other mom's had this problem? What remedies worked best for you?

I'm looking for some new things to try. Her screaming in pain tonight was breaking my heart!

Addition: I have tried some cloth diapers. The other issue I'm running into right now is she is lactose intolerant. So we are working with that as well. With the frequent soft stools that she has, I just haven't been able to do cloth diapers very well. But, I did switch over to Seventh Generation diapers to try to help with the problem. We do change her very frequently here at home, so when she is at home the diaper rash is very mild. Unfortunatly, she does not have her diaper changed quite as quickly at the babysitters as she does here at home and that is when she ends up with the horrid diaper rash.

So What Happened?

THANK YOU! I received lots of great advice! I will be trying some of these different remedies and hopefully will find one that will work for her. I did try burnt flour overnight last night and gave some for the daycare provider to use today, recommended by some of my sister's coworkers, can't say that it really helped, so we will try something different tonight. Again, thank you for all of your great advice...you mammas' are awesome!!

CORN STARCH-------I used an old remedy my grandmother told me when my first born was starting to have a rash. She told me to use CORN STARCH and I'm telling you the first signs of a red bottom, I would put some on and it would be gone within the day or the next day.

Good luck and hopefully something will work soon.

I had the same problem with both my kids, we figured out that kiwis caused it to happen with my daughter. It was awful, the smallest amount of poop and it was like pure acid. We discovered making a pin hole in a vitamin e pill and rubbing the oil on the rash it would clear it up almost completly the same day. This trick worked great on both my kids as well as family members. Hope this helps and good luck

use bounty paper towels and water instead of wipes while she has a rash. the baby wipes irritate it more plus you will save money not using wipes all the time. I used paper towels and water at home and when they didn't have a rash would use the wipes when we were out. I also carried folded paper towels in a baggy and took an extra bottle with water to use for the diaper bag when they had a bad rash. It usually helped a lot, changing their diapers frequently, using water instead of wipes, and used desitin creamy and put it on lightly after every diaper change until the rash was gone.

Just be sure it's not a yeast infection because regular creams won't work and you would need to get a cream like nystatin from your dr or can try using vagisil.

I didn't have good luck with cloth diapers helping so just used luvs and changed them more often. all 3 of my kids were allergic to huggies diapers.

My Ped said to use Vaseline rather than diaper paste because the paste can be hard to wipe off during cleaning causing further irritation. The Vaseline creates a barrier so the mess never actually touches the skin, and it is easy to wipe off the mess and reapply. It worked like a charm for my boys who also had this issue.

M., I am a childcare provider and as far as I'm concerned the diapers should be changed More frequently with me rather than less!! Mention to your provider that your daughter's bottom is still really red and you (meaning both of you) need to keep on top of it. Hopefully approaching it that way wouldn't be accussing in any way.

Here us a rememdy recommended by one of my clients Pediatrician. Mix equal parts Triple Antibiotic Ointment, Lotrimine, Hydrocortizone Cream and Butt Paste. I call it the miracle cream. It really works wonders.

Good Luck

I did have that problem too. My daughter would get real shiney, then blister, welt, crack open & sometimes even bleed. We used petrolium jelly to protect her. It's easy to wash off but creates a great barrier. Secondly, we only used warm water & wash cloths to clean her up when she had a break out. The soap in the wipes hurts hurts hurts. Good luck little tushy!

Our pediatrician wrote us a prescription for Bum Balm and it helps wonders. When we are out of that, I use neosporin and then lather on the Burts Bee's diaper cream. Cornstarch also works well to dry the area and isn't harmful like baby powder. I also rinse out our wipes or just use flannel rags (well, not rags- but old shirts cut up) that run under warm water. I hope you find something that works for you!

our doctor said to use whatever diaper rash medicine had the most zinc oxide, which was desitin and we kept her slathered up. Another thing we did was give her aveeno oatmeal baths for diaper rash then let her lay on a towel and air dry.

You could also try slathering her up with vaseline when you think she's teething, before a poopy diaper. The vaseline will keep the moisture away from her bottom.

Bev R. is right about yeast. For thrush, my daughter was given Nystatin, a relatively safe drug (drops by mouth). (The yeast was triggered by the penicillin she was prescribed for the staph and strep she was diagnosed with in the hospital.) Other yeast drugs are much less safe and can cause liver damage. You can use a topical antifungal on the diaper rash, like you would on athlete's foot, but the doctor may be able to prescribe something more effective.

One thing you need to understand, though, is that if this is yeast, this could be the beginning of a long battle with yeast--something conventional doctors are ill-equipped to help you with. Yeast/fungus can cause a myriad of symptoms. My personal experience leads me to believe that it is the culprit in so many of the learning problems children have today. A chiropractor-kinesiologist can get to the root cause of yeast, leaving your daughter a happier, healthier child. There are several in Wichita.

Poor thing! Our kiddos are like that as well, blisters on their bums. I don't have any suggestion other than to try to leave her bare-bottomed when possible. It's tougher now that it's not summer. We did this last week with our 10 mo. old. (Of course, 30 seconds after I took it off, she peed all over the kitchen floor. Sigh.) Hang in there!

I am trying to think of the name of the cream we used! It comes in a white tube with brown writing. It is used for fungus on your feet! It cleared up within hours! Certainly within 24! Go to pharmacy and ask for this and they will know what it is. Our pediatrician recommended this for us. AHHH it is called Lotrimin!!!

My daughter had a diaper rash so bad, nothing I tried would cure it. So I took her to a doctor who said it was a yeast infection. I read about that on the web and discovered something called THRUSH which infects babies and toddlers with the similar yeast appearance of white dots or red blistery when worse. Then I figured out she kept getting it whenever we bought and fed her more apple juice. So I did some web searches and found that is common and possibly causes candida. Just this week on the evening News somewhere in another State a foreign mother was not allowed to board an airplane due to her sick infant which they thought would infect all the passengers. I think they said they decided the child only had a bad case of THRUSH.

great advice thus far, my only tip comes from my one encounter (thank God!) w/diaper rash...dr. advised to not use any wipes, but to just use wash rags to blot the poop off, or like the other post said, rinse it in the shower. now as for what to apply on the bottom, my little boy SCREAMED (probably like yours bless your heart) when i put paste or anything like that on there. i used old fashioned corn starch. my advice clearly came from baby boomer age & older, but it doesn't hurt & it works. so...i sure hope that helps. bless your heart...and hers. hope it gets better soon sweetie. :)

I know what you mean about it breaking your heart! My 18 month old can get those horrible diaper rashes too. He has eczema and sensitive skin and sometimes eating certain things especially acidic can cause those blistering rashes. Soaking in a tub with Aveeno oatmeal bath (or even milk) helps to soothe his skin and then I slather on A&D Ointment, NOT The diaper cream, but the OINTMENT. It helps to heal the rash and puts a protective barrier on the skin similar to vaseline. This has worked really well for my little one.

My son just got over a horrible diaper rash. He woke up screaming in pain saturday night because he pooped and had a rash so it hurt. He poops a lot, so of course that didn't help :-)

Every time he pooped I would stand him up in the shower and using a handheld shower head, rinse all the poop off with that. Most of it would come off on its own, but if not I would wipe it off with my hand....washrags made him scream as did sitting in the water. Then, I would just let him lay on me in a towel or walk around naked for at least 30 minutes (scary, I know). Then, before I pue first a diaper on I would put Aquaphor all over. I made sure to change his diaper often and put Aquaphor on every time, not just after poopy diapers. By Sunday afternoon it pretty much cleared up. Today was the first time I have used wipes since the incident.

Good luck!

Dr. Boudreax's Butt Paste is a miracle worker! I'd also be having a talk with the sitter. If your daughter has a bad diaper rash and your sitter should be taking steps to prevent it as well. She needs to change her diaper more frequently. She shouldn't be letting her sit there with a wet diaper. Good luck!

How old is she? Is she eating solid foods yet? I know you said this is most likely linked to teething, but I wonder if something that she eats on occasion might be causing it as well?

It took me a long time to figure out that if my daughter ate more than 5-6 blueberries, the moment she urinated she would break out into a rash that caused redness, spots, sometimes even bleeding. :( It was awful. I met another mom who had the same problem, so I always offer this story when I hear of nightmare rashes.

My second has this problem. I would tear up when she would cry over it! I called the pediatrician and was told not to use baby powder, but it was THE ONLY THING that really worked. I, however, use cornstartch- the Johnson and Johnson brand. I also was told to make a paste of neosporin with pain releiver, desitin and vasaline.

I hope you were able to find something to help! I saw some had suggested vaseline- please if at all possible do not use a petrolium based product on her! The best suggestion I saw was using the lanisol- anything that has lanolin in it will heal the best and provide a natural coating to prevent acid from eating her skin! Desitin is good- as long as you can find the older ones with out the smelly additive- also not good and I could tell it burned my children when I put it on them. Also have used the Berdoux butt paste- but I wasn't my very favorite.

Can you let her go diaper-less for long periods of time?
If you can predict her pooping time, you can plan to "catch" poops as necessary. Also, would you consider trying CLOTH diapers for a while.
And change her much more frequently than you have been doing?
What did your mom say she did for you and your sister when this happened?

I by total accident found the best thing for a mega sore bottom. My son woke in the middle of the night with a raw butt. I had nothing, no cream, powder, vaseline...nothing but a tube of breast cream, called Lansinoh, left from my early nursing days. I cracked the tube open and lathered it on and bam! I stocked up on that stuff right away. To this day, I have found nothing that worked that fast and was that soothing all at once. Hope this helps.

put on the diaper cream/paste/vaseline THICK--LIKE YOU'RE ICING CUPCAKES. Be preventative by putting it on all the time or when you expect a rash will come. I was buying tubes of Destin 2 at a time at Costco for a while. If you are out in the backyard or have non-carpet floors, you can let her go naked and air out.

Hi, my son never experienced that much rash. I feel so badly for your daughter. However, I did try to always dry his bottom after changing his diaper, to try and prevent rashes. I just used clean rags or wash cloths. I have also hear another mom say to let the child relax in the home without a diaper on for while. The air might help to heal the rash faster. That wasn't something I was ready to try with a boy--not sure when or where his aim would go. However, maybe that might work with a girl. I hope this helps. :)
