My husband and I are looking to replace our gas guzzler Explorer with either a Honda CRV or a Toyata RAV-4. We would love to hear pros and cons and personal experience. We've been researching these cars in Consumer Reports, online, etc. and are now looking for real world/family input. Thank you!

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

We have a 2002 Toyota RAV4 and we love it! I immediately was comfortable behind the wheel. It comfortably fits two car seats and has ample trunk area. The roof rack comes in handy for extra cargo hauling. We also have the moon roof, which we all love and it's a lot of fun. The CR-V is a great mini-SUV, too...my mom has one. My best advice is to test drive and see which one "fits" you and your family better. Best of luck and happy hunting.

Take care,
J.

A friend of mine had an older Rav-4 and loved it. While another friend just bought the new CRV and she loves her car. I was car shopping last September and checked both of them out. I liked them, but ultimately decided on the Hyundai Santa Fe and I love it! It fits two car seats well and has lots of trunk space. It's also been great on gas and comfortable on longer trips.

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any of them. They all have good reputations.

I've always driven toyotas, partly b/c my brother-in-law works for Toyota. I have their mini van and really like it. it was hard transitioning into being a mini van mom since I'm only 27, but I have 2 kids now and drive other kids around as a nanny. I love the DVD player and the remote doors. Anyway, if you go w/ toyota, i can get you in touch w/ my brother-in-law who is one honest car person, if you know what i mean.

LMK and good luck!

Hi, S. -

I had a 1998 Honda CRV and I LOVED that car. When it got a little older I traded it in, but it was not because it had any problems - I think that car would have run forever. I have two kids and they had plenty of room in the back seat. It was also very roomy for cargo.

I wasn't sure about the new body design (2008 I think), but it's OK. I liked the previous body style better, though.

I know Consumer Reports always seems to go with the Hondas. I don't know much about the RAV 4, but that's my two cents about the CR-V!

Good luck.

Well.....you can't go wrong with either. Both companies make quality cars. I however have a Honda Element, I know, that ugly thing. Well that's what I said when it was suggested to me but I love my Element! Go test drive one. It's so kid friendly! If you still want a CRV or RAV4 like I said you can't go wrong.

I had a Honda CRV and have passed it onto my daughter so I could get a new car. I checked both of these cars and found there was more room in the Honda. In the front area and the back area. I bought my Honday 5 years ago. I have not "really" checked out the new ones. Briefly looked at it and loved what I had seen... Friends of ours needed the height area in the Toyota for a wheel chair for their daughter...which Honda did not have. My son is over 6 ft. at 18 years old and had plenty of room....good luck and have fun "test" driving...,.
