Homemade Babyfood - Westwood,MA

I want to make my own babyfood. My baby is 2 months old and won't be eating solids for a few more months but I was wondering if anyone knows how long I can freeze it for. I figure if I start making it now I'll have quite the supply by the time she needs it. I'll take any information and suggestions that you've got.

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
I am mother to a six month old and make all her food. You are definately ahead of the game. I wish I would have thought to make food before she got to the eating stage. I us the "Super Baby Foods" book, and most foods I have made out of this book are good for 2 months.

Sorry this response is so late, but I try to make all my baby food too. My mom gave me this great cookbook - First Meals by Annabel Karmel, and it explains it all. All I needed was a small food processor, a very fine strainer, and lots of ice cube trays - also a small steamer. The cookbook is great a introducing you to new combinations of flavors - my daughter eats better than we do. She does like the store bought stuff, but it makes her constipated. It is good for eating out of the house though. I hope you enjoy it - it really is so easy! and affordable!

I used the "Ultimate Chopper" for this and it works GREAT. I wouldn't make too much ahead of time. Good luck!!!

I think you can save them up to 3 months. I used to puree the veggies and put them in icecube trays with plastic wrap over the top. Then pop them out and put them in a ziplock with the date and what veggie it was. Go to Wholesomebabyfood.com. They talk about everything on their site. I used it a lot as a reference when I was making my son's food. I was good with the homemade stuff until Peyton was eating a lot. Then I felt like I was making food for the kid 24/7. But it IS cheaper. And I think better for them. Good luck! Oh, and each cube is considered 1 oz. So it's easy for measuring how much they're eating.

You sound really excited to start making food! We got a little food grinder that I used a lot (especially when I was too lazy to chop onions and get out the big cuisinart. :) ) Really- babies don't eat that much at a time... and one sweet potato will make quite a quantity of food so I don't think you will have to do anything special ahead of time... just be ready with ice cube trays to freeze the extra of what you do make and your supply will get ahead of her tummy pretty quickly. Plus- you don't want to make a tremendous amount of something because your baby may hate it- and after you have tried one food 6 times or 6 icecubes worth of it only to be spat back in your face... you will feel undone to have 6 trays of it (mooshed peas for example) in the freezer.
Your darling sounds like she was born at the end of March. (edited to add- just noted april 7 birth.. our son was born at the very end of March) Our son hated mooshed food, would not touch baby food. His first food was the bits off the bottom of the turkey- the stuffing/fat/tiny bits of meat that just melt in your mouth. My husband then made turkey alphabet soup and he would eat the little alphabets with the broth with all the vitamins in it. He still will not eat mashed potatoes and has only just now accepted applesauce sometimes. He likes yogurt though- yobaby was great.
I know you are excited, just don't get too far ahead of yourself- you can stock up on baby food servings rather quickly- and at that time better gage her tastes.

Good morning,
i believe you can freeze it for up to 6 months.. You can freeze it right in ice cube trays.. Then when it is frozen pop them into zipper baggies.. Then just pull out how ever many cubes you want at meal time.. Good luck and best wishes... Home made taste better than jarred.. And you knw whats in it..

Hi L.-
That is the best decision you could make! You should pick up the book Super Baby Food. It goes over everything you need to know to make your own baby food. Here's a link to it. You could probably buy it used on Amazon.com. Good luck.

Your pediatrician will probably have your baby try the cereals first then veggies/fruit, so you probably have a few months before you need to start making food. When you do, here are a few ideas:
1. Glad makes these 4oz containers with lids. I liked using them to store the food I made rather than ice cube trays. It also made it easy to transport when we went out. I still use them to this day to store my daughter's left overs (they are little enough to store a little of something and don't take up too much space in the fridge.
2. I didn't buy any special appliance to make my own food. I just used a blender, some microwaved/steamed veggies and some water to get the consistency I wanted. I used some websites to get some ideas initially, but then once you figure it out it is easy.
3. I still had some jar food around for when I was in a pinch, but when I could I used the homemade food as it just tastes so much better.

Hi there
I never bought store bought food for my kids, i made my own. my sons are 6 adn 7 adn very healthy. my youngest had dairy, soy and egg allergy. so i cooked with all fresh foods, to this day they love veggies (broccoli, peas, salad, etc) the only store thing they used was ketchup!! i would even make chicken fingers for them as they got older. i used rice milk for alot of his meal mixing. i did not do alot of things fancy, with 2 toddlers adn working full time i mainly just made extra and froze it that night, in ice cube trays until they started eating more and more. i really loved the idea of feeding them healthy recipes that i made and could read the ingredients.
i think it is great that you are going to do this, adn it is alot cheaper and really is not that difficult. once every 2 weeks i would make a couple different meals, and spend the day making baby food while daddy entertained, worked out great.
good luck and enjpy you new addition
