Help with Satellite/cable

Hi ladies,
Normally I wouldnt give one patootie about cable/satellite or electronics. However, we are looking for ways to lower our monthly bills. We currently spend far too much on cable every month. It's not my choice at all, I would rather not have a television but I am out numbered and outvoted. Trying to change a package with Comcast is torture. They rig all of the packages to either charge the same amount or even charge you more in the end. We are seriously considering a satellite dish. We aren't sure of reception in the Tinley area, will it constantly go out in bad weather, or what company is the lesser of two evils. Dish Network or DirectTV? Can anyone help me with this one? Hope everyone had a great mothers day!

What can I do next?

We have Dish because we found direct not to have enough of the channels we watch in their basic package. It only goes out when the storms are really bad but then you can watch previously recorded shows with the DVR. Good Luck we went through this earlier this year.

We had Direct TV and I really did not like it. If it snows...no tv. If there is a bad thunderstorm where you really want to see the weather...you can't! Windy days the dish had a hard time too b/c the tree branches were moving so much it could not get a clear signal. We have WOW Cable right now. We cannot get Comcast here so I do not know how comparable they are. But, we have our phone, internet and 2tvs with the HD DVR's through them and it is like $120/month I want to say. Hope this helps.

We have the Dish through At&t and the DISH is ok but At&t service is terrible. They are the worst to deal with or fix any problem. I would never ever reccomend them. So if you happen to go with the DISH, make sure it is NOT with At&t. They are AWFUL. And the DISH does go out when it storms. Its a bit sensitive. Other than that, its ok. We switched from Comcast because their customer service was bad, but At&t is 10 times worse. We went from the pot to the fire. So please beware, At&t's customer service and installation really really sucks.

Hi A.!
We have Direct TV and my husband I love it! One thing you need to know that the dish needs to face south and it has to have a CLEAR view of the southern sky. To be very honest with you, we have never had any real problems! Yes, when it rains we lose the signal, but that is only when the rain comes down directly onto the dish. Also, your local channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, and WGN)come in whatever the weather is! We have no problem watching the news and weather when it is raining, snowing, windy or anything else! We have had Dish Network, but we changed to Direct TV because Dish Network had a bad customer service department! We have the biggest channel package, with no movie channels (except right now we have all the Showtime channels for the next 12 months for free because we have been good customers in good standing!)and we pay $60.00 a month. I would definately recommend Direct TV, it is a lot better than Comcrap, opps, I mean Comcast!!

P.S. They are also very good when you are moving. You leave the dish and jsut bring your box and they come out and put a new dish up! Very simple and no problems at all!

I too reached my limit of tolerance with Comcast. In our area it is the only option for cable TV so the satiellite is the only option. My issues with Comcast were not only cost but poor customer service. DirectTV has gone above and beyond my expectations in that department and we have been very happy. Yes, weather issues will impact service, but we use such moments as an opportunity for family time. If it's really bad, we can turn on the radio for news updates.

I love in Orland Park, and was also fed up with my Comcast bill and service. I have always had fantastic AT&T phone and DSL service, but my husband had refused to bundle up with AT&T for TV because he did not want a dish on the house, and had heard negative stories about reception and sporadic service. AT&T's U-VERSE just became available in my neighborhood, so I had it installed last week. Wonderful installer, but it did take several hours to make the switch from Comcast to U-Verse. I will save lots of money, monthly, now that I have the phone, Internet and TVs all together, and so far we are very happy with the service; our picture quality on the TVs is terrific. Right now you can only have 2 TVs in your home accessing the HD signal simultaneously, but that will be upgraded soon, and for us it is not an issue. Call AT&T to see if it is an option for you, and have them quote you the price. Good Luck!

I live in Oak Forest & have had Direct TV for many years. For being a good customer, they gave us three months of Showtime at no charge. I've never had problems with the dish unless it was really bad weather. And their customer service is great.
Good Luck!

Hi A.,

You should definetively go with DirecTV. We have it for 3 years and it is great. Just make sure to get the package that fits your needs and that is affordable.

The service only goes off sometimes when there is extreme weather.

Good luck!

We went with Direct TV and haven't had any problems. The installer was extremely helpful and made sure I knew what I was doing before he left (and I had a 2 week old at home with me at the time!) It does need to face south, but we have a ton of trees around our home (we live in Homewood) and they were still able to make it work for us.

The reason we chose Direct TV over Dish Network is because with the Dish, you have to pay an extra $10 a month for the local channels. They're included with Direct TV.

Good luck!

By the way - we had terrible problems with Comcast, too. They were still charging me rental fees for 3 months after we returned the boxes!
