Help Starting a Business/clinic (Specializing in Tailbone Injuries)

2 part question:
1) I am a chiropractor in MN and would like to start my own business specializing in tailbone injuries. Basically I don't know where to start. I know I need tax id numbers, register a name, etc. Any advice would be much appreciated and if you have any references on MN specific guidelines for starting a business I would love to know it.

2) I am trying different ways to see how much of a need there is out there for tailbone treatments. Living in MN, I know there is an abundance of falls on ice, along with injuries from labor and other events that can be harsh on the tailbone/coccyx. I want to offer another very effective option, so people aren't limited to: living with it, pain injections or surgically removing the coccyx. So any personal stories or leads on marketing this technique would be awesome as well!

What can I do next?

I by no means have experience in this area but your question topic sparked enough curiosity for me to read your post. I have a good friend who injured her tail bone in high school basketball and to this day, if she sits for a long time, it hurts her. She told me it was pretty common, she also played college ball and a lot of her team mates have the same injury.

Not sure how you could market to that demographic, because your services are pretty specific, making your focus demographic relatively small. That makes marketing difficult, I'm sure.

People do tend to go to chiropractors for lots of issues so why not a general practice? Just a thought. Good luck with your endeavor!!

Don't forget to get a quote on commercial insurance for your liability and any equipment you need covered. I'm an insurance agent and started my agency from scratch. Its hard. Even if there is a "need" for tailbone treatments, I'm assuming any chiro can do that so you will have a lot of competition. check out www.meetup.com, its free. look at some local business networking groups and maybe you can go to a few and get info from other business owners. good luck!

I would put up fliers at local colleges and at sporting events. I would also sign up for a group such a business professionals group where you have a bunch of different businesses. You could also join a speech group. Suggestion here is that when it comes time for you to prepare a speech you can promote your business. Set up meetings with coaches at local colleges and maybe at the YMCA as well. Start looking around at your friends and collegues and see if they might be able to help put the word out. Set up a website on google or something else and then you can write blogs on different websites about tailbone injuries and the importance of an adjustment for better health and well being. Also talk to massage therapists in your area that maybe you could send business to each other. Talk to acupuncturists, coaches, PTA's, get the word out that you are in business and will work on anyone. Everyone you meet is a potential client and always have a business card and some info on you at all times about your wonderful career.

You could call your clinic "Pain in the a*#"?! lol ;)

I too would consider opening a general Chiro practice but letting people know that you specialize in tailbone/coccyx injuries after falls, childbirth, etc. I'd market to other practitioners including ob/gyns. Congrats on the practice decision! I work for a chiropractor and always have, and rarely ever see tailbone injuries or diagnoses, so I'd worry that such a narrow specialty would severely limit your business.

I would start by contact the Small Business Association. They could point you in right direction for all of the required licenses and typical insurances that are required for that type of business. Their website is SBA.GOV

Good luck.

I can tell you that if there had been an establishment named anything like "Tailbone Clinic" in my area in the past 15 years, I would definitely have been interested. Especially if it was promoted as offering "gentle, focused treatment." For what that's worth!

I did get a couple of chiro treatments after an injury, but they were a little too aggressive and actually made the problem worse. Perhaps a specialist would have been able to tailor the therapy to fit my needs a bit better.
