So, I am calling a child therapist first thing in the morning but, I wanted to ask you mommas to see if anyone could relate. I have a 3 1/2 year little girl and recently we have had some not normal behavior problems... at least not normal to me, or anyone around me. My cousin, her husband, and their two kids (ages 3 1/2 and 2 1/2) recently moved to the area we live in. So naturally, we have had play dates as often as we can. The first few weeks, they would come over and we would sit in the car port while they play on their bikes/scooters in the driveway. Well the last 3 or 4 weeks, every time we step out the front door or near the road, my daughter will have a panic attack or freak out like no other time because her cousin (only the one cousin) is near the road or in the front yard. She is sooo scared that he is going to go in the road. Well tonight it got so bad, she gave herself a nose bleed and I had to take her away and help her breathe it out. Has anyone else gone through this before?? I mean, she doesn't freak out if it is anyone else, it is just the one cousin...(the one that is the same age as her).

What can I do next?

I would take her to see a child therapist is her anxiety is so bad, maybe he can get to the root of what is causing the reaction.

Welcome to mamapedia!!

You recently moved to Hawaii or you moved to a different location in Hawaii? I ask because moving TO Hawaii is a HUGE change...which can cause a lot of anxiety...moving to a new area can cause anxiety as well.

No. None of my kids have had panic or anxiety attacks. Not saying it won't happen. It could. Has your daughter witnessed anything lately that would spook her? Did she or her cousin take a fall on the bike near the road? Has she heard another parent or you stating how EXTREMELY dangerous the road is?

You need to talk with her. She's almost 4, she can communicate. ASK her about her feelings. Ask her about why she is upset about her cousin going near the road...do NOT plant information....as in - don't say "did someone (or give a name) tell you it's dangerous?" let HER tell you in HER words.

Following up with the pediatrician and even a child therapist might help her as well.

Good luck!

My daughter was so afraid of airplanes that she wouldn't walk out of the house for a week or two. We tried to avoid the stresser by carrying her from house to car. It went away just as fast as it came on. That was over two years ago and it never reoccured.

Hopefully it's just a short phase!

This book really helped my anxious kid. Even though it's just one issue for her now -if she can give herself a nose bleed the techniques in this book will be helpful as other anxieties arise - even if they are minor. Having this vocabulary can keep little anxieties from turning big.

when my son was about that age he became terrified of wind. If the wind was blowing he would freak out and cry. Your daughter must have seen or heard something that is causing this. She will get over it at some point but maybe she can tell you why she is so afraid.

Put up some cones so cousin stays away from road. She picked this fear up from somewhere. Little ones have BIG ears. Who knows. You can also buy a driveway gate which I think is a good idea for anyone who has young children n play in the driveway.

Yeah maybe a dream that the cousin got hit by a car. I would just keep the cousin away from the road for a bit till it subsides.

Around that same age, my son lost his mind and had to be taken inside because we were at the beach and he was afraid of the rolling surf. He was nowhere near it. He was up the beach with his dad. But I was, and it terrified him. I think in his mind, mommy was way to close to the loud big thing he didn't understand.

He was not normally an anxious child. But he was fearful on my behalf.

Perhaps it is similar for your daughter. She is attached to her cousin and knows that the road is dangerous. She does not know that playing in the driveway near the road is not so dangerous.
