Help Me Fix My Splitting Nails!

Hi moms, I have noticed recently that my nails have begun splitting and chipping very easily. They look horrible! I also quit breastfeeding a couple months ago and stopped my prenatal vitamins, so maybe that's why. Does anyone know of a way to get them to stop splitting, peeling and cracking? I don't want to use artificial nails (too busy to keep up) but would be willing to go to a salon if there's something like a coating that could be applied to them to help grow out my natural nails. If there's an at home solution I would love to hear about that as well. Any ideas?

Keep taking prenatal vitamins, they are so good for you. Besides, accidental pregnancies happen very often so it is best to be prepared.

Vitamin B. If you take a vitamin B every day it will strengthen your nails, make your hair grow, and be strong, etc. There is a nail glue you can use, but I don't remember what it is called, my grandma uses it. She goes to Sally Beauty Supply and gets a bottle that looks like nail polish.

I don't know about any "solution" to fix them, but I do know of some AWESOME nail polish that should do the trick! Sally Hansen Hard as Nails or Nail Growing Nail polish is AMAZING!! I have the same problem and I can only grow my fingernails long and beautiful if I am using Sally Hansen. It really firms them up, so they don't break or split NEARLY as easily. And, its a nice neutral color or clear, so if you don't wear nail polish regularly its dicreet. Its probably about 5-6$ at your local CVS or Rite Aid.

multivitamins are always good for your hair an nails. You can also try evening primrose oil capsules. I used the use those to help improve my hair and nails... it was on that stuff that I was able to actually grow nice looking nails for the first time in my life. I do have to say, I love how my nails look when I'm on my prenatals, though. =)

It's probably a hormonal adjustment. You might want to get your thyroid checked - that was a major indicator for me. Postpartum thyroidism is pretty common. Good luck!

There is a vitamin that you can get which helps with nails and the overall health. May want to check with that. Mine do the same thing... you can get an overlay over your natural nails at the salon but it requires the same up keep as artificial and the same amount of money. There is a good product called Nail Teks and it is wonderful too. There are a couple sets but worth it. I think you can get it at the Ulta store or any salon. Good Luck!

The strengtheners or other products that you put on top of your nails are really not going to do much if you don't get to the root of the problem (work from the inside out). Since you just stopped taking your prenatal vitamins, go get a women's multivitamin to replace it. Maybe one with extra calcium. Trust me, it will help a TON. You can ask your doctor or pharmacist about the best kind of vitamin, or if you're into natural stuff or whatever, check out a health foods store or natural supplement supplier (there are plenty on this site that like to invite you to talk to them about it). But that's what's going to get your strong healthy nails back. Don't just try the creams, polishes and strengtheners. You need to strengthen them from the inside. If you're really diligent, you could do it with just diet changes. Whatever is easiest for you! Good luck.

I use any strengthener from either Ulta or Sally, depending on where I am. Sally's are cheaper, if I remember right, and work really well for me. Taking any kind of vitamin would probably help, too.

J. D,

I would recommend cutting your nails every other day, little by little to get the strength back in them, also certain soaps that contain Q15 will damage them as well as continually washing, which we need to. Also another trick I used to do, tap nails on kitchen table or like surface, it will also help strengthen. I stayed on vitality for life prenatals for 5 years then switched to vitality 6 vitamins. Keeps my hair nails just as healthy as my insides.LOL

Beta Carotene is the vitamin primarily responsible for your finger nails. I find that if I take a multi-vitamin or a Beta Carotene supplement, the splitting stops.

Hi J.,
You can go back on the prenatal vitamins or start with a nail strengthen. I'm a nail tech in Parker and my favorite one is Nail Tek Intense Therapy. You buy it at a salon or Beauty Brands and Ulta. You can also help by getting manicures once a week or twice a month. Getting shaped up and cuticles pushed back will help them to grow. Please go to a clean salon. You can check a salon with the state board to see if it has had a problem in the past.

My nails split and break as well and a lot of it has to do with how dry it is here. If you are looking for a nail salon, check out The Nail Studio ###-###-####. It is in Boulder and owned by four moms and they are all wonderful women. I am a regular there (or at least try to be) and highly recommend them. I see April, but any one of the ladies there would be great. My nails are always in better shape when I go there. They can recommend strentheners for you. Hope you will check it out!~Cindi

Have you had your iron levels checked? I had that problem along with a few other things and found out that I was anemic. I now take a daily iron supplement and my nails and hair are looking so much better.

OPI has some nail strengthening products. They're available at Trade Secrets among other places, just ask for some guidance to pick the right one. They aren 't as cheap as the stuff at the drug store but they actually work for me.
