Does anyone no about heated mattress covers? My 2.5 DD doesn't like blankets; I put her in warm PJ's. My house is 74 at night, I am cold. I wear flannel PJ's and have a water bed. (She sleeps in a twin size bed) So I think she may be cold too. She doesn't wake up at night but she does toss and turn a lot.
I was thinking of getting one of those heated mattress covers???
Any thoughts, is this a bad idea? What do you do to keep your toddler warm?

What can I do next?

Hi B.,
Could it be that she is actually too warm instead of cold? I would probably stay away from any kind of heated mattress covering with kids for most of the other reasons listed.

My daughter also does not like to be covered up unless it is with the blanket her grandma made, but even that does not stay on all night.

If she is sleeping through the night and a happy girl in the morning I would just keep doing what you're doing.

I don't use one with my toddler. He is still in a crib. I do have one on my own bed. I love it. It has a control so you can keep it as warm as you like. I like it better than my electric blanket. I will most likely get one for my son when he is out of the crib. Good luck.

I don't know for sure but i have heard they can actually make you sleep worse. Something about them can be bad for you and they can be a fire hazard. I'd ask my Dr.

Hi B.~
Just wanted to add another angle you might not have though of. We discoverd, after freezing our bootys off in our house even after the thermostat was at 72, that the culprit was actually the thermostat itself. It is situated directly above the heat vent in the living room, so when the living room is 72, the rest of the house is freezing. If that is the case in your house, consider closing the vent closest to the thermo. and see what the temp in the house really is. IMO your daughter is old enough to wake up and pull a blanket over her if she is cold. Just keep one handy for her. I think a heated blanket or mattress pad is fine, but personally I would warm up her bed before she gets in it and then unplug it. Just to be safe!

74 is actually really warm to me LOL we keep our house at 67degrees.

She's probably just fine in warm jammies and is just a restless sleeping.

I wouldn't do a heated matress cover or electric blanket with anyone so little due to the risk of them overheating or getting burned.

WE have a heated mattress cover on our bed and the direction say not to use with children or animals we have both in our bed all the time. But I'm not sure that I would put one on my children bed electricity and children don't mix. If they wet they bed I would be afraid that it would short circuit and they would get hurt. Plus you have the cord that have to be plugged in. Plus if she not waking up I would say that she is fine. Some children just move around a lot when they sleep.

Heated blankets and mattress covers can be dangerous for kids. They can be fire hazards and burn hazards. 74 degress is warm enough at night. We have our house at 62 and both my kids are normally fine. I dress them in warm pajamas. My son is getting better about keeping covers on, but my daughter kicks hers off. But I think if your daughter is staying asleep, she's most likely fine. Just put her in footie jammies and an undershirt and she'll be warm enough. Kids just kick their covers off. My son tosses and turns all night, too. He's 4 and we still have one of those mesh sides for the bed because he rolls all over the bed and I don't want him to fall off! You can go in and cover her up before you go to bed, I usually do that. But as long as she doesn't complain, I wouldn't worry too much.

My daughter, same age, wears footed fleece pajamas, but she'll keep a blanket on her all night. We turn the heat down to 67 at night, so your house sounds toasty warm to me!

I've heard that heated blankets and mattress covers are only supposed to be on to warm up the bed, but once you are ready to sleep, you should turn them off because of the fire hazzard. With her being so young, I would think it would be okay, but I would suggest turning it off when you go to bed. You don't want her to be overheated or risk a fire.

Have you tried covering her with a blanket after she's asleep? Or does that bother her, too?

I think winter PJs should be fine. 74 is very warm. We keep our house at 68 24/7 and the vents closed in the bedrooms, and we're great. I've heard it's actually better for you to sleep in a cool room.

If you all are cool at 74, I'd wonder about your homes isulation, or windows.

My son's room is usually a bit cooler than the others, and I use a space heater in his room. This seems to work great. If your daughter is sleeping through the night okay, then I really wouldn't be too concerned. Footed PJs with maybe some socks underneath should keep her warm enough. I would try a space heater rather than anything electric for her to sleep on or sleep with.

Try the pj's with feet in them...you could even put an undershirt on under them. But if she's not waking, she may not be cold. In any case, the pj's may be cheaper than the heated mattress cover!

I would be very worried about a heated mattress cover or anything like that. I have heard of those things getting a short in the wire and starting on fire. I would actually be scared to death to let one of my kids use on. The only thing you could do if you did get one would be to turn it on maybe 10 minutes or so before bed time to get it warm and then turn it off so you wouldn't have to worry about fire. Hope this helps...this is just my opinion I am not an expert. Good luck.

Hi B.,
I have a heated mattress cover my mom bought me when I moved out (and didn't take my waterbed) and I love it! I have had it for 7 years now and it's the greates thing. I have gotten my 8 year old one too since she loved my so much. You just have to becareful of the setting. I set hers to a nice temp and then don't let her touch it. But it's the greates thing ever. I even bought a heated blanket because it was on sale for 16.00 (reg 60.00) I have only used it once or twice when we went up north, but it's still well worth the money :o)

Hi B.,
I also wouldn't use a heated mattress cover. I put my kids in footed pjs but I also put them in a onesie and socks, too. It keeps their feet warm. I think that 74 is warm. My house is turned down to 64 at night. 66 during the day. I would get a space heater before a blanket. We have a space heater for my youngest. Ours turns off automatically if it is tipped over, or if is to warm. Good luck.

I had a heated matresss cover at one time. It dried my skin out badly. my suggestion is that you use footie pajamas and don't worry too much, because they are small, they don't get rid of as much heat as we do - smaller surface area.

I know when I'm cold, snuggling with my little ones (5 and 3) warms me up right away!

We use the heated mattress covers for our kids. I think they are safer than electric blankets. Just make sure you start on a low setting, and buy one that is washable. Some of them have a timer function which is nice, so you don't have to remember to turn it off each morning.

just an idea- with flannel pjs and 74 degrees she may be too hot. ?
Our house is between 65 at night and our two boys (3.5 and 1.5) sleep alright with footie pajamas and blankets. She may learn better to keep herself warm in the blankets if the house is cooler.

My baby does the same thing, and I worry about her keeping warm. I just make sure that I put socks on her under her feety pajamas, because body heat escapes though your head and feet. So, keeping socks on her, under her pj's will help. Other than that, maybe a t-shirt or onesy under the pj's. I'm not sure about the heated mattress cover. They used to not be real safe, but maybe they have changed. Maybe ask her doctor.
