I agree, get an echocardiogram and see if you have Mitral valve prolapse.
Annoying but basically harmless. They can give you medications to take for it (as needed) when you have the palpitations.
Does anyone else get them?? Where do they come from and is there any medication to stop them?
They come at the most random an sporadic times. There's no one thing I can pinpoint that triggers them and it drives me nuts!! I'm 29 and have cut back on caffiene and even try to sleep on my right side instead of my left which I've heard can help. These things seem to help a little but I just want them to stop permanently!! They're scary and always catch me off guard and make me panic a little. I also have to catch my breath a little afterward and i'm not sure if thats because it makes me nervous or because of the HP itself. One time it was so bad i felt like i was gonna faint while driving and almost pulled over but then it went away just as fast.
I've had an EKG, ultra sound, x-ray and any other test on the heart and everything came back normal. So I got the typical anxiety diagnosis and Xanax prescription. I'm not totally discounting anxiety but I feel like it's something else because they come so randomly and I don't think I have any more anxiety than usual or more than anyone else. I feel like going to the dr. again would be a waste of time because I'll get the same answers. Please anyone who has any advice or knowledge would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for all the advice. I have had an echocardiogram and thyroid test and they came back normal. I do have seasonal allergies that seem to worsen this time of year but i don't take benadryl or any kind of diet pills or meds. I asked my dr. when i had those tests if i had mitral valve prolapse and they said no. I am going to try the vitamin like Cc suggested and see if that helps, i have always been slightly anemic so maybe it will! Thanks again.

You might want to have your thyroid checked, too. I had heart palpitations when I was your age, they never could diagnose anything. Giving up caffeine entirely helped some but it still happened sometimes and my resting heart rate kept going up. Ten years later I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid and they said that was the cause of the tachycardia. Good luck!
I used to get them quite frequently. They ended up being caused by two pretty simple things to fix. The first is over the counter nasal decongestant. Gives me palpitations every time, so now I avoid it like the plague.
The other was stress induced panic attacks. I was still nursing my son at the time of diagnosis, so rather than take meds, I entered counciling. It has worked wonders. I have learned to be aware of situations that are going to set me off, and deal with them through relaxation and meditation before the panic attacks start. I've only had a handful since I started counciling 4 years ago.
I hope you get it sorted out soon.
I get them when I take diet pills. Are you on any over the counter meds that your doctor does not know about?
Benadryl makes my heart race like that....do you use that?
I get an occasional rapid heart palp... it is a freakish feeling. I usually just take a couple of deep breaths and that's it. It's not something that happens often tho..maybe once a month. If you are having them often I would ask for some further testing or maybe get a 2nd opinion on the tests you've already taken. I've read that getting the occasional palps is pretty common and not anything to worry about.
Hi Mommyof2,
I do get hp as well.I have anemia which makes your heart beat faster because the blood cells have to work harder and they arent strong. Take an over the counter vitamin with iron. also vey helpful is a combination of calcium, magnesium and zinc tablets. This combo acts as a tranquilizer and should stop the palpitaions. Drs. especially males are quick to give anxiety meds to women. I prefer women drs. for that reason. Next dr. visit get your blood checked as well as your thyroid. lastly, relax with a bubble bath or a glass of wine. Every mom deserves that!
I get them pretty often. I had an EKG and doctor said it was normal. I have not had any further testing, but I have learned that they are a lot worse when I am under a lot of stress, and even worse when I am really tired. I do drink a lot of caffeine, and that might be related. I think they are pretty common though, but they sure are scary, especially when driving or while alone or something.
Did you also get an echocardiogram? It shows a picture of the heart, mine were all normal except for the echocardiogram which showed I have a MVP-mitral valve prolapse. Didn't even know I had it, it's not dangerous and fairly common, but it causes palpitations out of nowhere. I never even had palpitations but my dr said if I did, he would give me meds for it but never had it, if you did not have this done, you may want to get it done just to rule it out. Good luck
