Have You Heard of the "Banana Split for Dinner" Tribute?

I just read about it now.

Basically, a family whose 21 month old son had a terminal congenital condition had been asked by many people what they could do to help. Instead of asking for anything for themselves, they just asked that everyone have banana splits for dinner to create a memory and make the most of the time they have with their kids. I think they are a wonderful family for being so selfless in such a terrible time.

The little boy just died, and tomorrow, we will be having our banana split dinner.

What can I do next?

So sweet!

After my father died, the evening after the funeral, one of my cousins was going to take all the kids out to Baskin Robbins to get some ice cream... she asked my M. what she wanted...

First, she said, rather impulsively, "A Banana Split! I've never had one!" Then she said, "Oh, a dish of vanilla ice cream would be fine...."

My cousin brought her home a banana split... it was so much fun watching her enjoy it! Imagine..... she was 68, and had never had a banana split!

Life is too short... eat dessert first!

Okay seriously, I have tears streaming down my cheeks, that is the saddest yet sweetest thing. It's funny because just last night we had a hectic day and were out and about and I knew it was too close to bed time and my kids were melting down. So in a last minute decision we decided to get them baseball helmet sundaes (we were at the All Star Game Fan Fest, since the big game is here in KC) and call it dinner! They were huge, delicious, so unhealthy and perfect! My 4 year old asked what was for dinner and when we said this is dinner, she quietly looked down at her ice cream and whispered...awesome! It was priceless. But, I may have to incorporate some ice cream sundaes in the near future too. Thanks for sharing this as a good reminder.

Yes, I loved that they are encouraging others to do these things with their children. I was so sorry to hear he had died..

When our child was young we did all sorts of "non traditional" things with our daughter.. Picnics late at night during school nights, movies all day long eating junk, going from theater to theater all day long..

All sleeping in the living room as though we were camping.

Eating ice cream for breakfast, or dinner..

Pizza for breakfast.

Cooking bacon and eggs on our BBQ pit after spending the night in the tent in our own backyard.

Getting up super early to see planets..

Going to breakfast at all night diners with our child in her Pj's.

Think of fun things to do with your children.. They are the best memories. Be grateful our children are healthy and happy.. Do not get into a rut.. and never take them for granted.

I didn't hear he passed away :(

Our family had our banana split dinner 3 weeks ago :)

I seen it on facebook... I was taken back by all the people who said they were not "going" to the event! I had to stop reading the responses because one by one I was getting more upset. They had reason's like we don't eat chocolate or ice cream in our family.. really!?!

It is such a heartwarming feeling though to see all of thousands of people leaving their stories or well wishes for such a neat thing to do... bring families together and forget the norm of things and just have fun as a family for one night!

I read about this yesterday! The mom was saying that when they knew the end was coming they got him a fake tatoo, rode a "bike" and had the police come in and give him a "speeding" ticket. She said he son was a "badass"!! I laughed through the tears! We had our ice cream last night!

Yes, I've heard of it. I think it's a terrific idea. My husband and I have been talking about doing it, but our son is sick with a bad cold, so we're waiting for health first.
