Have You Heard of Clomid??

I went to the doctor the other day and told him I want another baby. Well the problem with me just counting my days or anything like that is that my period comes and goes as it wants. I don't have a normal cycle never have and probably never will. He is doing some bloodwork and tests. But in the meantime he gave me a name of a fertility drug that will help me ovulate. He told me I should research it and when I go back in a month to have researched it so if I need it I can make a choice about it. Has anyone heard of Clomid? If you have I just want to know what you know. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Clomid is sort of the first step in fertility drugs. if you have a mild issue then it usually helps. if not, then they start increasing the dose and if that doesn't work then you will have to switch to a fertility specialist. with Clomid there is a slight chance of twins, but that is as far as it goes. some women can go into hyper-ovulation (i think that is what it is called) and that can be bad-you get really bloated etc, but that is usually with the very high doses. i took clomid -in every dose imaginable and had no issue-no ovulation either, but no adverse effects. i think it is pretty safe and if it works for you that is great!

M. - I took clomid as I was not ovulating when we were trying to conceive my daughter. It helps you to ovulate and your cycle to be on track...i can't remember but i think after your period ends you take it for the next 7 or 10 days and then you ovulate...come to find out we conceived my dauther without the clomid! It is stressful when you do fertility and the clomid made my emotions pretty "high"..other than that I didn't have any other side affects. Good luck! It does work and i think it is worth it. It is the least of the invasive treatments with fertility. Hope that helps.

I know many people who have taken it, my fertility doctor has me on Femara which is a similar but different fertility drug.
Out of the people I know who have taken Clomid, some have had no signs, but some have had severe mood swings, hot flashes, nausea... it works by binding in the brain so there are usually at least a side effect or 2, but you'll just have to see how you feel. My sister-in-law took it for her first child, but she won't take it now that they're trying again because it makes her ovulate "violently" for lack of a better word - the cramps on ovulation day were unbearable for her!! But I definitely know people who have taken it with no side effects whatsoever and they've all had successful pregnancies! Good luck!

Hi M.
I was on Clomid for 3-4 months and then was pregnant. I was on the depo shot before, it took me 3 years to have a baby. About a year to get normal again from the depo, I didn't have a real period until about 8 months. Then I went to the doctor and I had to wait about 5-6 months after that until they consider you to have a problem. Then I tried ovulation sticks for a few months, they are at the $$ store and do work, I just was having trouble. Then I had my overies tested for blockage and I was good, I had an exam, blood work, ultra sound. All were normal. This took about 3-4 months, then I did clomid from the obgyn for 3-4 months about nov-jan and then was pregnant jan 18th 07. Mind you I knew b/c we had been trying for so long. So I took a preg test early. I had no side effects on the med, insurance covered it but a co/pay. The only thing is you have to have intercourse like 5 days later, for a few days. So just make sure that you can do that. Hope it work out. Take care and let us know. Alison and morgan now 8 months.

Hi M.,
I had to take Clomid for the very reason you are considering it. I had very irregular periods I sometimes wouldn't get one for months and then it would be so heavy and painful (sorry to be so graphic)! It helped bring on a period and then within two months I was pregnant. I'm not saying that this will happen to you but that's my story.

I took clomid and got pregnant on the first try with my now 10 month old son. I believe clomid is supposed to restore hormonal harmony in your body so that you can produce a healthy egg. It basically regulates your cycle and creates healthier eggs. As a result you have a better chance of conceiving. If it comes down to it, I would recommend taking it. Especially if you have never had regular cycles. Good luck!

M.,
I'm curious, if you've always had irregular cycles, did you conceive your daughter naturally? If you did, then why do you (or why does your doctor) think that you need fertility drugs? Everyone has made such a big deal out of "TTC" and all the planning and counting ... and while I know that there are people with genuine cases of infertility, people can get pregnant by just not using birth control and having frequent sex. My periods weren't totally regular either but if I had sex at least every other day, I felt that I was guaranteed to hit ovulation. Have you been actively trying to conceive, and if so, for how long and how frequently are you having intercourse?

Clomid was also suggested for me when my period was crazy and I wanted a baby. We were blessed 3 years later with a daughter by natural occurances but I had opted not to use clomid. It makes you ovulate and that is what you want but the problem is it can and probably will make you have multiples!!! Twins OR MORE!!! I am against abortion and the Dr. said that if there were too many "fertalized eggs" BABIES!!! they would want to do selective abortion. Another words terminate some of the babies and leave others. I could not handle that thought and I was sure that I was not cut out to me Mom to twins, triplets or more all at the same time. Also the fact tht you have one child (by natural means?) says that you do ovulate sometimes at least says you should try to old fashion way! Practice makes perfect! Give it a year before you decide to use meds or other means plus your young so you have an advantage. A.

I took it with both my children. It is one of the mildest fertility drugs there is. I even accidentally took a high dose while pregnant with my first child and there was no adverse affect on him at all. Go for it and have number 2.

I used Clomid to get pregnant with my first child. It only took a few months and I don't recall any side effects or problems. We used it again when we wanted another baby, but that time around I got ovarian cysts from it that wouldn't go away on their own. I had to have surgery to have them removed. My ob/gyn wouldn't put me back on the clomid after that so we eventually had to go to a fertility dr. and we used other methods to conceive. So I had a good and a not so good experience. I think generally it's pretty mild and safe and it's not like I wouldn't use it again if I needed to.

I got pregnant using Clomid with my first child. I'm surprised your doctor didn't tell you more about it. In fact, I'd require my doctor to give me more of a briefing! I ended up seeing reproductive endochrinologist who ran some tests and discovered I had elevated FSH - Follicular Stimulating Hormone. Basically that means my ovaries were not responding to the normal amounts of it, so my body was releasing more in order to get my ovaries to mature and release an egg. Because they learned that was my issue, Clomid was a good choice to help because it stimulates ovulation. Personally, I wouldn't take anything until my doctor knew what was going on with me and had an educated opinion of why he or she thought I should be on a particular drug. Anyhow, the Clomid was no biggie. It gave me some hot flashes but that was about it. 2 cycles later I was pregnant. You do run the risk (or rather increase your chances) of multiples because it can stimulate many eggs at once.

I have a similar problem with unpredictable periods. I am NOT good with any type of medication, it always makes me feel strange. I had fantastic success with the book and charts from Taking Charge of Your Fertility. A super method for trying to get pregnant or trying not to... It's a big book but a fast read, and you'll learn more about your body than anyone has ever taught you!
Good luck! :)

Hi M.,
Not only have I heard of Clomid, I used it for 2 cycles and the first time it didnt work. The Second time however I got pregnant! Clomid Can cause multile births, However its not very common. It does give you cramps and headaches while taking it. its usually a 5 day thing. What I was told is counting is important. You take the pill on the 5th day of your cycle and continue until your 9th day then on the 14-16th day you are most fertile. I started it january 26th and conceived on february 4th. Its awesome. I recomend it!

Hi M. - I have been on Clomid several times in the last two years. I gained a ton of weight (like 30 lbs), became an emotional mess, and never got pregnant (even with insemination). Then, I went in another direction and read "Taking Charge Of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. My cycle was never regular either, I had periods once in six weeks, then once in three, then once in eight. What a nightmare. Now, I know my cycle like the back of my hand. I can tell exactly when I ovulate based on the signs in the book. I've had my life circumstances change recently, and now I use the tips to NOT get pregnant. I will be trying again sometime though, and have absolutely no desire to turn to Clomid or any other fertility drugs! Good luck to you!!!

I used it, but didn't have any success with getting pregnant, as my body rejected any synthetic hormones. If I were you I would do a search of a Dr. Deborah Metzger. She is now out in CA, I met her when she was here in CT and became my infertility doctor. She is well known in the field and has had such success with helping women get pregnant that I tell every woman to contact her or at the very least go to her website and see what literature she has posted. If it wasn't for her I would not have my last 2 children, who truly are miracle babies thanks to her. She put me on Micronized Progesterone, which she has compounded at Women's International Pharmacy. Over the past past 14 years we became very good friends, she is now a very big part of our family. Let me know if you need her phone number or cannot find the website, as I have it saved in my favorites.
Hugs,
T.

If you don't want to take medicine, you could try the Clear Blue method they advertise on TV. My second daughter could be the poster child for that stuff. It works like a pregnancy test. Keep track of the first day of your period and then 14 days from then start peeing on the stick and it will tell you when you're have a hormone surge. My husband and I tried it for three months and I got pregnant. Good luck.

Well, I was on it for about 4 months and I didn't get pregnant. :) Only when I was off of it.

My sis in law got pregnant with twins on Clomid.

You will have a higher risk of multiples on that. And I've heard it makes people crabby on it...but don't quote me.

You could chart your temperature - your temp rises when you're about to ovulate and that's what worked for us.

Best of luck...

My OB prescribed it for my first child because I have the same problem. We had been trying for a few years at the time. I had the script filled...husband kind of iffy about me taking it due to the small chance of multiples..but we had been trying for so long. He said lets wait one more month (cycle) and come to find out it was the month that we conceived without using it. Then after my son was 1 we almost immediatley started trying again since we knew it could happen without any help and knew it may take a long time. When we realized we may need help this time again, my OB prescribed it again and I did 2 cycles of it and we were pregnant! My daughter was born a few months after my son turned 3. We figured we were complete with one of each and it took so long to have them. Surprise my middle child was 9 months old and we got pregnant again not even trying. Things happen for a reason! I love the fact that my 2 youngest (both girls) are exactly 18months apart. Trying at times but well worth it. I had no reactions that I can remember with the drug. Hope this helps.
