I had my third child back in September '07 and had my tubes tied in Oct of that year. I am wondering what the chances are of getting pregnant again with them still tied? I have heard and read numerous times of women getting pregnant with them tied and carrying full term......just looking for other people possibly that this has happened to or have known people this has happened 2?
Thank you!

I had a friend who got pregnant after having her tubes tied, but it ended up being a tubal pregnancy and she had to terminate.

I think its extremely rare. I had essure done and then reversed and have been pregnant 2x since then. the 1st a miscarriage and I am 3 mos pregnant now
Do you want to get pregnant or are you trying to avoid it? One option is IVF which is very expensive. Its cheaper to get the procedure reversed. I think IVF is painful as well.
Best of luck

Is it you are looking to get pregnant again or hoping the odds will be in your favor of your tubal ligation not working?? Or have you gotten pregnant with the tubes tied?

What ever it is..... the % is low. Some tubal ligations do reverse themselves...our bodies have an incredible ability to heal themselves sometimes.

You sound like you have your hands full as a single mom already.

I used to work in reproductive health care and our clinic performed thousands of tubal ligations. It is extremely rare to get pregnant although there are a few operations that fail either because the physician wasn't thorough enough, or the method used wasn't the best (example: bands didn't used to be as effective as cauterization), or the body somehow healed itself. Once something has been done to the tubes, the risk of an ectopic pregnancy is there - if, against great odds, an egg gets fertilized and gets stuck in the tube or even gets into the abdomen and adheres somewhere else, that's an emergency situation. However, this is extremely rare.

I'm not sure if you are regretting having your tubes tied and are hoping to get pregnant, or if you are worrying about getting pregnant despite your sterilization. If the first, you can look into reversal surgery or IVF. They are not easy options but they are out there. The surgery does not affect the uterus or ovaries so, if if a woman then undergoes IVF and it is successful, there is no reason not to have a successful pregnancy. If the second option is on your mind (the operation failing), you can relax, I think. It's extremely rare to get pregnant "accidentally" after tubal ligation. I never looked back after my tubal ligation because I knew it was the right decision for me, and it's been great not having to worry about pregnancy or contraception.

I hope that, before you had your surgery, you had good counseling to be sure you weren't going to regret the operation. Our clinic always did outstanding counseling to be sure that all our patients were secure and firm in their decision. That's really important. Sterilization needs to be looked at as a permanent and irreversible decision. It doesn't make sense to use surgery as a temporary method of contraception, with another surgery waiting in the wings to reverse it if someone changes her mind.

Good luck to you.

Hi S. - Are you hoping to get pregnant or are you afraid you might be? I ask because I recently asked on here about reversal surgery and peoples' experiences with IVF. I had a tubal after my youngest was born two years ago and I regret it now. My husband and I have looked into reversal surgery and IVF and we are right now taking preliminary steps to possibly do IVF. We would love one more child, but not at such a cost that it would negatively affect us and our two kids, financially or emotionally. Insurance doesn't pay for either option because you elected to do it, at least my insurance does not. I have just had this feeling lately that I'm not done with having kids and I'd LOVE one more, but on the other hand, if it doesn't happen, I am so lucky and blessed with the two kids I have now, and I will try not to live my life with regret looking back all the time and saying, "what if"... Anyway, feel free to private message me if you want to chat more. By the way, I was searching posts on here recently and I did find one from a woman (in 2006) who had had a tubal and got pregnant and had a healthy child. It can happen but it's rare. Take care...

Having your tubes tied does not effect your ability to carry a pregnancy to term, so that is not an issue. You should be able to get pregnant through IVF if you really want to.
