My dr prescribed augmentin for me this week. She emphasized that it was known to cause stomach upset and that I should take every dose with a full meal to try to minimize that side effect.
My son has been on augmentin since Wednesday. This is his first time taking augmentin. Today he started complaining with pain in his chest/abdomen. When I ask him exactly where it is hurting, he points to just below his rib cage; almost on his side. I suspect that it is gas pressure because he's been pretty gassy the past day or so. I just gave him some gas drops and am hoping that helps. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar with augmentin? Thanks in advance.
The pharmacist told me to give it to him with a meal, which I have done with each dose. She didn't tell me anything else. I know that augmentin is a strong antibiotic and can cause stomach upset just as any other antibiotic.
Since giving him the gas drops, he hasn't complained any more of pain in his stomach. Thanks for all the feedback.

Didn't the drug come with possible side effects? The pharmacist usually goes over this when you pick it up. I would also call the pediatrician's 24 hour nurse line and talk to them.
You should talk to your pediatrician about it.
The only thing I can think of is some sort of gallbladder trouble but acid or gas are possibilities too.
What dies your Dr and/or pharmacist say?
Augmentin can be tough on the stomach. It’s usually communicated upfront by Dr and pharmacist.
The pharmacy is supposed to include a list of possible side effects with the medications when you get them. what does it say about abdominal pain and gas?
You can also call the pharmacist and ask them if this is a normal side effect of if you should stop the medication and talk to the Dr about something different
Augmentin is one of the toughest antibiotics on the digestive system...call your doctor to determine if the side effects are worth the benefits...

Augmentin can also cause diarrhea so just be ready for that too. It might happen if he's already having stomach pains.
Augmentin always gave me a bellyache and gas that could peel paint off the walls.
It could be just a coincidence. Hopefully the gas drops will work but you could always check with the pharmacist.
FWIW.., I’ve been on augmentin many times for sinus infections. That never happened to me.
You should take a probiotic when you take any antibiotic since the antibiotics reek havoc on your natural gut bacteria.
