Has Anyone Ever Heard of Stomach Migraines?

My 15 year old son might have what I'm being told is stomach migraines. They told me the official name but it is long and I'm not sure if I could even spell it. He has had trouble with stomach pain in the pelvic region (about 2 inches below his belly button)on and off since November 2005. We thought we had it figured out by his being lactose intolerant, but his pain has come back with a vengeance. I will appreciate any information anyone has. I've been doing alot of research and it seems it is something that is very unresearched and undocumented.

What can I do next?

This site is strictly informative. My daughter experienced these when she was 7-8 for almost two years. We battled it daily. We never did find the trigger and antiinflammatories didn't work that well either. She only had them during the school year, so I think it was stress related. Anyway, I ended up telling a sobbing 7 year old to "deal with it". Absolutely the hardest and worse time in my life. We went to the doctor and ruled out every possible physical cause before I reached that point. Today, she is 11 and still gets them occassionally, but has learned to take an ibuprofen and continue to work through them. It is miserable. Good Luck!

C.,
Both I and my 16 year old son have migraines that often manifest in the stomach. My son's neurologist told us that he has some patients that their migraines only show symptoms in the stomach. If you've not had your son checked out by a pediatric neurologist, please call Texas Child Neurology. Any of their docs are excellent and can help your son. Adolescence is a terrific time for migraines and with growth spurts, it can be hard to keep them at bay. The contact info for Texas Child is: Texas Child Neurology, LLP, 1708 Coit Rd., Ste. 150, Plano, Texas 75075, ###-###-####. They also have an office in Grapevine. My son sees Dr. Anthony Reila. It can be a trial; but, there is help.

I have never heard of that but it sounds similar to what I've heard about hernias. Have you checked that at all? That's so strange. Keep us posted.

This doesn't sound exactly the same(because you didn't mention vomiting), but my son was diagnosed with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, more commonly referred to as abdominal migraines. In addition to his stomoach pain, he had prolonged vomiting spells. If this is what your son has, it can be treated with daily medication. My son took daily meds for two years and now seems to have outgrown it. They have told me that he will probably have migraines as an adult though. Hope this helps.

Hi C.-
It sounds like he needs an adjustment. Take him to a good chiropractor. I deal with this alot (I'm a chiropractor) and it is usually just an adjustment that it takes to get them better.

I am not sure about stomach migraines, but I have had terrible pain in my stomach since I was little and I would curl up in a ball and just cry. The Dr. perscribed Tegament back then and it was like a wonder drug. You can get it over the counter now. It seems like the stomach pain started and still does when I am upset or worried about things. It is worth a try. I hope he finds some releif, I know how aweful that feels.
