I had a few when I was pg with my youngest - it freaked me out! CPS are usually harmless, whether or not they *resolve* before birth, but they are correlated with an increased risk of Trisomy 19 (not Down Syndrome, but similar). Trisomy 19 is a really horrible disease but it is very rare. For my age (36), normal risk is 1 in 1000; risk with a CPS was about 1 in 120. So I chose to have an amnio and know for sure. The risk of an amnio causing problems with an experienced neonatologist is about 1 in 700. We did it right then and there when I had my u/s.
Needless to say, my amnio came back 100% fine, and my son was born happy and healthy at 38 wks. Also because I had the amnio, I didn't do any other screening - including the echocardiogram that they like to do in moms over 35. I have no regrets for having the amnio. I don't know what I would have done had we found out he had Trisomy 19, but I always feel that the more info the better.
Hope this helps! Please don't freak out. You should talk to your doctor about the risks of a chromosomal defect for your age with the CPS, and also the corresponding risks of an amnio. I am the sort of person that would have freaked out not knowing, and the two weeks between my amnio and the results were awful. Also we never told a soul b/c I didn't want people looking at my son funny wondering if he was 100%. By the way, he is now 9 mo old, crawling, climbing and standing, says 4 words, and our ped says he is very developmentally advanced.
