If she bruised the bone, the lump can stay there for a while. It takes bruised bone much longer to heal completely, and a knot will stay there when the other bruising has subsided.

I really don't think you need to panic. You probably got yourself all worked up which is why you went to the ER, but it wasn't an emergency condition. Can you tell if the lump is under the skin and pushing the skin out, or if it seems to be "attached" to the top of the skin? That might help you decide if you should see the pediatrician or a dermatologist. If an xray was negative and an ultrasound has not produced anything conclusive yet, it doesn't sound like it's anything that they feel should be biopsied. Usually the "worrisome" lumps are lymph nodes, but that's an unusual location for one - and by the way, swollen lymph nodes are caused by all kinds of things, most of them not serious. It's hard to say why she was bruised to begin with - perhaps she took some sort of impact there? That would explain the discoloration going away. There are different types of cysts that form for a variety of reasons - again, usually not serious and often not requiring treatment. If it's hard to the touch, it doesn't sound like a papule - so it's more likely something under the skin, right? Do you think it's remaining swollen in any way because of constantly touching it (either her, you or the ultrasound technician)? I think it's really important - though difficult, I know -- not to worry unnecessarily.

what does your pediatrician think? Did she have any blood tests to see if it is a lymph node or a cyst or some type of infection that has created a wall? Know it is hard to wait on results. Good luck to you and your daughter.
