So Halloween will be upon us before we know it! I'm trying to figure out what I should dress my 2 1/2 year old son up these year. I'm more of a unique kind of person so the everyday costumes such as Thomas the train, Spiderman etc just don't cut it for me. He was a Tootsie Roll his first year and an Oompa Loompa last year (SO CUTE!) So does anybody have any ideas for me? What are your kids going to be or what have they been in the past that was out of this world cute and everybody loved? Thanks for the suggestions!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. My son has no idea what Halloween is. Since he just turned 2 in April he really hasn't been old enough to get it so that's why I think I can pick out his costume this year. I certainly don't want to keep the fun from him by not letting him pick out his own costume...he will have plenty of years to choose what he wants to be. Anyway it's been fun reading all your remarks of what your kids have been in the past years--we have some creative people on this site! Thanks again!

When my son was 3 he wated to be a mummy. (Try finding a preschool sized mummy costume!) Iended up makingone. I used tea to stain a white sweat suit then hot glued torn strips of unblached cotton all over and painted his face. We got SO many compliments!

My child was the typical bee her first year and then a lady bug last year. This year she will be 2 and I hoping to be crafty and make her a Yo Gabba Gabba character. Last year we seen 2 kids as thing 1 and thing 2 from Cat in the Hat which I thought was AWESOME. I'm totally using that if I have another child!

Good luck!!

My 3 year old daughter wants to be the Lorax and she wants her baby sister to be a truffula tree. She is a big Dr. Seuss fan. Is there something your son really likes? Last year my daughter was obsessed with dinosaurs so that is what she was for Halloween.

I LOVE this site for ideas and instructions.

I try to go with my children's interests. Last year my son was a garbage man. His costume was easy...beige jeans, long john shirt, orange vest, cap and work gloves. Then we covered his wagon with a big box and made the box look like a garbage truck. We cut a hole in top for the hopper and my son dumped in his candy (that was collected in a garbage bag). We bought push lights and hot glued them to the front for "working" headlights. It received a ton of comments and he LOVED it!!!

I could not make any costume for our grandkids, they each and every one have their own ideas and told me what they wanted to be each year.

Last year the 2 year old saw a chicken costume in the store I work in and grabbed it and said he wanted to be a chicken for Halloween, I bought the costume and he wore it to three different parties, he won first place at Wal-Mart in his age group. The 6 yr. old wore a different costume to each of the 3 parties and won first place at Wal-Mart too and at church. I have every expectation that they will tell me what they want to be this year too.

I made my daughter be what I wanted her to be when she was little and she has the worst memories of Halloween, I thought she looked adorable but she was miserable each and every year, and she named off almost every costume and told me what she had wanted to be instead so I know it was a true story and that I made her lose the joy of Halloween..

Ok, so I'm obsessed with not doing mainstream costumes. My son is 4 1/2, so it's probably going to get tougher now, because he'll want to choose, and of course, I'll let him be whatever he chooses. It is, afterall, for him, not me. But... I will do my best to make my idea seem appealing... lol So far, I've made all his costumes, and I'd like to continue doing that, if possible. I'm not much of a seamstress, but I wing it. lol

When my son was almost 2, he was Bamm Bamm. So cute because he was such a bull in a china shop at that point, and he looked like him, so it fit.

The next year was the year of the summer olympics where Michael Phelps won 13 gold medals. So my son was Michael Phelps. Speedos and all. OMG, it was sooooo cute. And we didn't see a single other Michael Phelps that year. Man, people missed the ball on that one. SO easy. A flesh colored bodysuit and leotards, blue speedos tailored to fit, 13 gold medals, a swim cap, and goggles, and a candy bag with USA Swim Team on it.

Last year, my son was Popeye. Also just darling. He started watching the cartoon, and loved it, so we went with it. I made his muscle arms out of stuffed flesh colored leotards, and drew the anchors on them, and sewed them into a black t shirt decorated to be a sailor shirt, with a red felt flap in the back and gold buttons. He wore blue pants and brown boots, with a white sailor hat. His treat can was an empty paint can made to look like a can of spinach, with spinach leaves coming out the top. A littel tricky to make, but also really fun.

Still thinking for this year, but I have an idea... just need to get my son on board... LOL

when my son was 4 he wanted to be a robot!! so i made his costume. i tin foiled a box and bought dryer vents for the arms. i bought a metal colindar for his hat. i also got grey jogging pants and cut the dryer vent in half and sewed them on to the pants(much easier to sit down in) and i spray painted a orange pumpkin in chrome for his goody bag!!! that was one of my favorite costumes my son had!!!!

After his first halloween my son has always picked his own costume, mostly by picking whatever his favorite thing was at the time:

Surgeon (huzzah for baby scrubs over sweats!)
Lion
Alligator
Stitch (Lilo & Stitch)
Inuyasha (anime character)
Master Chief (halo charecter)
10th Doctor (doctor who)

My son is old enough to come up with his own ideas now. Last year, he was a basket of laundry. He had a hat covered in unmatched socks. We cut out the bottom of a round basket and attached shoulder straps and small empty soap bottles.
The year before, he was a chef. Chef hat, apron, oven mitt, whisk- with a pig nose.

our two favorites so far....my daughter was a fish and my son was a fisherman one year....we did Scooby Doo and gang as a family...Nightmare before Christmas has great characters to do as a group. Last year they went individual - he was a dinosaur and she was a flapper. Good luck - he might surprise you this year and give his input!

My son has always loved bugs, so he had a bug streak--ladybug, pincher bug. Last year he was a turtle. It was very cute.

Last year my baby was a devil (it was her first halloween) hehehe. This year I am playing around with the idea of either a punk rocker or pebbles from the flintstones. =)

Ww like different costumes too. Last year (when he was 2 1/2) my son was obsessed with garbage trucks and told me he wanted to be a "garbage truck drive man" for Halloween so that's what he was! I got him a puffy vest and my husband made logo's on the computer that said "Zach's Candy Removal Service" - it was really cute and people loved it. And his trick-or-treat back was a small garbage can. He's now obsessed with Spiderman and Buzz Lightyear so I'm worried this year will be an unoriginal Halloween! Hope you find something great and have an awesome Halloween!
