Instead of hair conditioner, use liquid fabric softener on the hair. It works great. Just a small amount mixed with water as a finishing rinse after shampooing.

I know this sounds silly, but we are having major problems with static hair in our house. By major, I mean that my oldest daughter, who has hair all the way down to the middle of her back, is sticking out in every direction on end- all the way out! I have tried fabric sheets, and they are doing nothing. My three year old can't see most of the time because her neck length hair is always in her eyes, and the poor cat is getting shocked every time I pet him! Please help, I know this is silly, but if the baby screams one more time from getting shocked I'm going to scream with her. Our clothes are not staticy, just the hair. And by the way, I was visiting with a girlfriend the other day, and ran out of diaper cream. The baby had a horrible rash forming, and my friend suggested that we put Vaseline on her, and then sprinkled it with powder, and it really worked! The diaper rash disappeared in hours, and I just wanted to share that with all of you.
Thank you all so much! I am going out this week end and getting a humidifier. I have been slacking on putting the leave in conditioner in the girls hair, and have noticed that when I do put it on them there is way less static! Thank you all again, I love mama source!

Biolage Shampoo and Conditioner has some static reducing properties. Helped with my hair. Can always first test it out on the cat :)
we have that problem in the winter especially, with the heat and all. I love Aussie Mega leave in conditioner, called Aussie instant. We also have to really condition our hair, (my daughter and I both have real long hair)and don't use a blow dryer. Also, things like polar fleece make it worse. I have to use fabric softener when washing too to help. My last favorite thing is a different, not spray, leave in conditioner called Potion #9. You can get it at most salon's, or Sally's carries a generic brand that works just as good. Last idea, get a huge pot of water and leave it on warm or low on the stove to add some moisture to your house. You can put oranges, cloves, and cinnamon if you like for a wonderful smell, or if someone is sick use eucalyptus oil to help open sinuses and energize.
I know how you feel! My 5 year old has static so bad her hair stands on end all the time!! It's pretty funny!! I used Static Guard on her hair. Just pray a little on her hair and it really helps and it doesn't hurt her hair at all. That's the only thing I've been able to find that works!! Good Luck!!
I have to agree about the microfiber. Usually kids tights are made out of this and they create a ton of static when washed and dried. Just thinking that with 3 girls, they probably wear tights sometimes. I love the leave in conditioner too. I use it every day on my hair before drying, but when DD has static I spray a little on her dry hair and just smooth it down. As for your youngest, maybe you could touch something else right before you touch her to get the shock out?

Have you tried cool mist humidifiers around the house? It sounds like the air is very dry.
I agree on the leave in spray conditioner for their hair but for the "shocking" problem I would suggest getting a humidifier or two and putting them around the house to add some humidity. That should cut down on the screaming from getting shocked. Also, if your house is carpeted try wearing tennis shoes and not shuffling your feet. This will be terribly hard to explain to the girls at 7 and 3 but if they shuffle their feet they are creating more of an electric charge and as soon as they touch something they are going to get zapped. Good luck!
Hi A.,
Try a humidifier. You need moisture in your air. The static is caused by extremely dry air. Hope this helps.
Try a leave in spray conditioner. You can get a light one and it doesnt take much. This helps my girls a lot.
Try spraying aerosol hair spray on the brush and brushing through everyone's hair a couple of time a day. That will fix the hair static but the carpet is probably the main problem. Some types of carpet just hold static and since the human body is a conductor of electricity it runs through our body and when we touch something or someone it "sparks" us up. You can try getting a roll of rubber matting and making some runners for the main walk paths in your home.

We have the same problem in my apartment. My daughter also has hair down to the middle of her back. I have a warm mist vaporizer going in our master bedroom 24/7 and a cool mist humidifier going 24/7 in our hallway. We live in Chattanooga and the moisture in the outside air the other day was 16%. This is the extremely dry season and you have to have humidifiers going all the time to accomodate for it. If you live in a house, you can have a humidifier installed on your furnace even if it is electric. They cost about $200-300 depending on the model you get. Installation should be handled by a professional though, they can be tricky to insall. We can't do that here because of the complex but we had bought a cool mist humidifier from Home Depot that was about 100.00 and you just keep filling it when it is empty.
That should take care of your problem. It took care of ours. No more shocks!!!

We recently started having the static problem too. But mine all started when I bought my husband some new socks that had MICROFIBER in them. Every time he wore them and I washed them, static was everywhere. We got rid of the socks and the static has stopped-go figure. See if anyone has anything made of microfiber and put it away for a while. See if that helps. Just an idea.
i feel your pain...literally! my best friend and i both have daughters (mine's 2 1/2 and her's is 3) with hair past their shoulders and she mentioned this same problem to her hair dresser the other day...the hair dresser said to get a leave-in-conditioner for our hair. she tried it and she said it works!!
good luck!!
try a leave in conditioner before you blow dry and after words too. make sure that it doesn't have any kind of alcohol in the first three ingrediants though b/c that will just dry out your hair more. You may have to visit a salon to get a good quality leave in spray
Worth a try,
I have been having problems with my daughters crazy hair. I have such long, thick hair that I donate it to locks for love after each child, pair that with my husband's african american hair and you get crazy hair. My mother in law just brought this stuff shampoo called organic root stimulator, it is olive oil based and has taken out the tangles, static and pain of brushing her hair. You can get it anywhere and now I use it on my own hair, my son's and my hubby's.
Good luck.
Hi. I hope this will help. The static is caused from not having enough moisture in the air. Try a humidifier or even putting a pan of water on top of a heat source. The water will be released in the air. Make sure it cannot be reached by small children.
