I just signed up for a free trial class for me and my 2 month old son at Gymboree. Can anyone tell me of their experiences with this type of class? I haven't joined yet, but was wondering if it would even be worth the money at such a young age.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone, I did take the trial class this weekend and decided not to sign up until he gets bigger. While it was nice for him, theres not much he can do right now and I don't have the cash to waste. Thanks for all your opinions!

Hi J.,

I feel that it is a complete waste of money for kids so young. Unfortunately, they try to get moms to think it's the best thing going. When I had my daughter, I had to go back to work when she was 3 months. I was so sad that I wouldn't be able to do those classes until I was able to be home full time. Well, I am so glad that I did not do the classes now. I started gymboree when my daughter was 3 (in an art class) and she loved it! She responded very well. I actually took her at age 2, and she didn't want to participate. Turns out a year made a huge difference. The only thing 2 month olds want to see is you and I'm sure you're a great mom! Congrats and don't waste your money. :)

Well, a two month old isn't going to gain much from the class at this age - he is too young to interact with the other babies, but it gives you some interaction time with other new parents, and that's very valuable! It's also time where you can focus solely on your baby, another great thing. I hope that you enjoy the class!

Hi,

Since Gymboree is so expensive ( I paid $400 for a 6 month play membership,Plus $100 more for a month of Art) I really wouldn't enroll a baby that young. I don't think they'd really get much out of it. I signed my daughter up at about a year and she LOVED it!!!!! At that age they like to play with other kids and she adored her art class. It was well worth the money at that stage!!

Hi J., I signed my son up for Gymboree at 9 months.I have to say I didn't care for it.It felt very rushed and regimented.I think kids need free play to explore on their own especially at a young age. Also just a suggestion, you may want to wait to join a group until after peak cold and flu season especially if your son has not had a lot of exposure to other kids.I would wait until your son is at least 6 months or older to join a group where he would have a better idea of what's going on. I would go to the trial class and see how it goes,it might be perfect for you both.

My experience is that 2 months is too young for these classes. The babies don't really appreciate it, and they get run over by the older babies. Wait until 5 or 6 months. My son really started enjoying the class once he was over 6 months.

The only way I think it is a good idea at that young of an age is if YOU want some interaction and to meet other moms. Other than that, I think it'd be a waste of money.

Hi J.

The classes will not really be for your son at this age. It will be a great place to meet other moms. If you are looking to expand your social network, this is a great option

I did Gymboree 16 years ago with my 1 1/2 yr old. She loved it! (especially parachute and bubble time) I don't think that the kids really get anything out of it before that age.

I joined Music Together class when my son was 3.5 months. At that age they don't really participate, but a lot of the mom's got together and made friends I think. I thought it was a waste at first, but the CD they gave me for joining the class was the only thing that would sooth him if he was upset and crying for a long time. He's 21 months now, and still loved the CD.

Hi J.,
I joined Gymboree with my daughter when she was about 14months old. It was fun for her and good for her to learn to socialize with other kids and also listen to a "teacher", follow directions etc... while still having me close by. At 2 months honestly I don't really know if it would be worth it for your child but it might be fun for you... meeting new moms

I enrolled my daughter at 2 1/2 months, in our class now (she is 3 1/2) there is a 4 1/2, 3, and 2 month old. The class is excellent for meeting other mommies, getting out of the house, learning new songs to sing, and getting adult time (we have even developed our our play group). The class for her at this age is more me interacting with her, doing tactile stimulation, etc. I definitely see her becoming more interested in things - even during the course of a class. I think level 2 (6 months) is a huge step, and cannot wait for that, but even at this level I think there is a lot to be gained.

I brought my son there when he was 3-4 months old and he loved it. Great interaction with the baby!! It gets you out of the house and you can bounce questions off the other mommies. I think if you have the extra money, it will definitely be worth it! Great for bonding and learning new games to play with him at home. Congratulations and enjoy the class!!

Hi J.,
Your 2 month old is a little young to do anything. I took my son around 18 months, after he started to walk. They have alot of fun things to climb and parachute time together with the other children. If i remember, they have music also. It is expensive, but u are spending a nice time with your son. My advice, hold off, until he's a little older.

I took a trial class once a long time agao. I think it is best when the child is actually able to move around some, crawling mostly. But it is nice that they do give the option or taking a trial cause that way you can see if it going to be good for you and your child.

Hi-I enrolled my son in a mommy and me class when he was 6 months old. That was the minimum age for the gym we went to. He wasnt crawling yet, and he basically just sat there. I thought it was a waste, and I wish I would have waited until he was crawling. When he started to crawl, he was much more a part of the class and then I felt I was getting my moneys worth.
BUT, if there are other moms there with children of similar ages, it may be a good time for you to get out of the house and talk with other moms. I guess it all depends what you hope to get out of it.
