I have a TERRIBLE sense of direction! ...and I get really anxious driving anywhere "new"! So...I was thinking about getting a portable GPS system for my car...but I know absolutely nothing about them. I don't want to spend a fortune--preferably no more than $150 (less would be even better!) Does anyone have any recommendations for brands/models? Thx in advance.

What can I do next?

We have an older model Garmin and I love it. My only issue is that, it being older, we can no longer update it and so it doesn't have maps in it for newer developments.

I've been told by multiple moms that the TomTom is a good system and you can get a pretty good deal on one at Overstock.com. Garmin and Magellan are two other good brands that I've heard people talk about. We have an older portable Magellan that we've used on hiking and camping trips and we love it but will be replacing it soon since it is older and starting to fizzle out. Good luck with your search and hope this info helps!

I have the Garmin Nuvi and it is wonderful! I get lost going around the block so I can't imagine driving without one. Get the one that speaks if you can b/c its easier to pay attention to the road when it tells you "turn left at..." instaed of having to look at the screen the whole time.

I got one for my birthday & love it. Just fyi, not all addresses are listed so it helps to have cross streets to find your destination.

The only one I have used in the Tom Tom, and I LOVE it. I have had it for years, I got it shortly after they came out. I use it constantly, it is so user friendly and it gives me lots of notice when turns are coming up. I too get very nervous driving around lots of cars, and it gets so much worse if I am having to look for street names and exits, but with Tom Tom I can concentrate on the other cars and what they are doing and let Tom Tom worry about when to turn!

I don't know if Best Buy sells them, but I would go and play around and see which one makes the best sense to you. Have a Garmin and LOVE it. My husband likes his TomTom. They organize differently, and so one style may make better sense to you than another. Both are good, reliable systems.

My husband & I love our Garmin Nuvi 255w's! I believe my brother has a TomTom. So, I trust both of those brands. Don't have any experience with any other brand.

When you do find one you like, you can find a good deal on this site: http://dealnews.com/categories/Electronics/GPS/357.html

They have a Garmin Nuvi 255w listed for $90! :)

I have a Tom Tom and like it!! It was a black friday item for about $100. You can find a good system for under $150. Try Walmart, Best Buy, Target and then see if you can find on line for less.
