Hi Moms!
I was wondering, does anyone have any good ideas for a Halloween snack my daughter can take to school? She has 18 kids in her class, so it can't be too expensive I'd really like to do something fun! Thanks!

Hi J.,
A friend of mine made some real cheap & easy snacks that the kids just gobbled up. You buy the small square pretzels, hershey kisses & m&m's. Heat the oven to 300, take the pretzels & put them on a cookie sheet, put a hershey kiss on top. Put them in the oven for like 2 minutes to just soften the hershey kiss. Take them out of the oven & press an m&m on top & you're done. She has made these twice now at parties & each time the kids & the adults just gobble them up. I think it will cost you under $10 for the whole snack. They're eye appealing & very delicious. Good luck!

Instead if treats, head to the dollar store and get pencils, erasers, spider rings, etc. The kids get lots of different types of food treats this time of year and they don't really eat all of it. Being a teacher, I have seen lots of great snacks get thrown out because they are just overwhelmed with the choices. Good luck!

I remember when my kids were little I picked up plastic gloves ( not rubber). Put a candy corn in each finger tip, Fill them with popcorn and put one of those Halloweenn rings on them.

That should be inexpensive. Those plastic rings come in packages.

Search Family Fun Magazine's webs site for other idea. They always do a "no-sew" Halloween costume feature. I am sure these popcorn hands came from that magazine.

Hi J.,

How about rice kripie treats. You can cut them w/ halloween cookie cutters. Make them w/ fruity pebbles or cocoa pebbles. If you use those you can even use the tube decorators to draw on faces.
Fruit on a stick? That dessert you use a pail and shovel to dish out. I think it's called dirt. Chocolate pudding, cool whip, crushed oreo's and gummy worms.
Good Luck. C.

I've seen some cute ideas in magazines lately. You could make pumpkins out of cantalope melon balls. Use a scooper and then use a green cherry slice for the stem. Also saw an idea of taking an orange and scooping out the insides. Cut a pumpkin face on it and then fill it will pudding or fruit salad. Rice krispie treats(and pudding) are yummy, but you might want to find out first if there are children in your child's class who have food allergies...rice krispies contain butter which is an allergen for those with dairy allergies. Another idea...buy a halloween ice cube tray and fill with jello.

I also saw other cute ideas on disney's family fun website.

I don't have an idea, but I just wanted to add to check with your school and make sure you can bring homemade treats. Lots of schools are moving to store-bought only, maybe for liability and allergy issues.

dip pretzels in chocolate and sprinkle with orange and black nonpereils. they are tiny sugar balls not sprinkles.
Not too costly.
Brownies are always a hit and you can put a little frosting on them and top with orange and black nonpereils. Also not costly.
Both have always made a hit.

What about scooping out the pumpkin seeds from all the pumpkins you'll be carving? Have a zip lock bag for each child with info inside and the toasted seeds. You can print out the educational questions and "recipe" here:

I like mini cupcakes. They are cute and fun and small portioned for the kids when there are so many other treats around them. Easy to decorate too to look festive!

i do choco covered pretzels.. so easy buy pretzel sticks.. melt one teas. of shortening and two bars or hershey chocolate of whatever is on sale.. melt on very low.. in pot.. then drizzle over pretzels... add some sprinkles if you want.. and I leave a few pretzels without chocolate because some kids just like plain ones.. also another fun idea.. and kids can help.. take a square pretzles. the little ones.. put 25 on a cookie tin.. add one candy kiss.. put in over 300 for 5 minutes or until just a little melted.. maybe even 4 minutes.. take another pretzel and push on top of kiss... they are like sandwiches.. put in fridge for 20 mintues.. and woola.. a great fun idea.. good luck

There are a lot of great snack ideas out there. Google Halloween snacks and you'll find them. I have a few ideas that a friend of mine found in magazines over the years. They might be on the internet as well :)

Spider snack - mini hotdogs, wrap in croissant dough (cut down to size) bake. After they have cooled you stick eight potatoe sticks in the sides for legs and two drops of ketchup for eyes. They turn out really cute and the kids love them.

Apple smiles or monster mouths - you can do this one two different ways. One is to take apple slices (skins still on) and stick two together with peanut butter so they look like a mouth. Stick Almond slivers in the peanut butter to look like teeth. If there are peanut allergies in the class you can make a fruit dip using cream cheese, powdered sugar and cinnamon.

finger sandwiches cut out with halloween cookie cutters.

Jello Jigglers cut out with cookie cutters - always very popular.

Hope this helps. Have fun!

Put gummy worms in a plastic cup and crush a brownie over it. Instant worms in dirt! Kids love it and it's really cheap to make.

I always made rice krispie treats. For Halloween you can add food color to the mix to make it orange before you put in the rice krispies. Or you can different colored Halloween sprinkles (I just saw them at Shoprite) and sprinkle them on top. The kids love it, they make a big batch, and it is not to costly. You can also pre-cut them into little squares and put them in Halloween cupcake papers to make a nice presentation. The Halloween pre-sliced cookies are also good. They come in Ghosts and Witches they also are a big hit.
