Hey Ladies! I need some suggestions for a gift for a boy that will be turning 10. I do not have a lot of money to buy an expensive gift but would like to get him something he will like (my budget really is not over 20). I never feel like I do a real good job with getting him gifts. I know he likes video games (of course) but really do not think I would guess as to that area. I was thinking maybe a gift bag with a few inexpensive things but do not know what or I am actually open to any suggestions. Thanks bunches

My ten, now 12 year old and his friends always liked gift cards. He would collect them until they were the amount he needed to buy what he wanted at the store. Ask the mom if this boy might like one and from which store...

I'd suggest a football or a basketball or a soccer ball, unless he already has all those things. It may get him outdoors and off the video games for a while. Plus it will last for a long while.

Gift cards are always nice. Do you know if he likes to draw? An art book with a few supplies is nice. Some general popular items for boys are Bakugan, Lego sets, and video games. I've given a Blockbuster gift card before, too. Or, for $20, you can make a movie basket with microwave popcorn, a juice, a $10 Blockbuster giftcard, and a box of candy. Get a sport-shaped container at Big Lots or a Dollar Store and wrap in cellophane for a nice touch. I also like the idea about the magazine subscription. My son, who is a HUGE Lego fan, enjoyed the subscription to the Lego Brickmaster magazine, which includes a mini brick kit every two months or so.

Rollerblades! That has been my gift all year long to all kids birthdays! That will get that kid out from in front of the TV and excercising, and its fun too! They are not that expensive, just about $25 at Target, plus they come in adjustable sizes since kids feet grow so fast!
Good Luck!

I'm looking through the Edmund Scientific catalog and they have some nice items that are reasonably priced. My son's 11th birthday is coming up and I'm having a hard time trying to find something for him.

They have a lot that's fun and educational.
If you don't find you like anything there, try a small Lego kit for a helicopter or something like that. They have them at Target and Walmart.

How about a magazine subscription like National Geographic Kids or Highlights?

Victoria,
You can go to a pawn shop to buy games to put in a gift bag. I'm on a tight budget too and they have dvd's and games. I always thought of them in terms of jewelry but my oldest son turned me on to purchasing there.

PS
They test everything before they purchase it ... so no worries.

I second the last poster's idea about the movie basket - I think that's a fantastic idea. However, I'd try to find out if the parents have a blockbuster or netflix subscription first. Alternately, you could purchase two movie theater tickets - one for the child and one for a friend.

My son is almost 9 and LOVES giftcards of any sort. He loves being able to pick out his own things, and to be honest, I prefer it too, because though I'm grateful for anything that our friends and family give, we often receive toys that he either isn't interested in or plays with once. Also, kids tend to have expensive taste at this age and it's nice to be able to combine gift cards from target or walmart to purchase a larger toy or item that he really wants.

Gift cards are always a winner at this age. Even with boys. I have 10 and 11 year old sons and they both LOVE to get gift cards from sports stores (Modell's, Dicks, etc.), electronic stores (Best Buy, Circuit City), as well as video game stores (Gamestop, EB Games). Money is always a hit too. I never spend more than $20. If this boy is in to sports, maybe a t-shirt from his favorite sports team. Kohl's has good prices on sports team shirts. Another idea is baseball hats of his favorite teams. If I find something that's only $10 or so I usually slip in a bunch of candy bars, which they love! Hope this helps. Good luck!

I also would do the gift card. My son is also 10 and loves them. Even if they are 10, 15 or $20. No amount is too small. Walmart, Target or even Game Stop are great choices. Now you can even pick up some visa/mastercard ones.

Gift cards to stores-Gamestop, FYE, Target, Toys R Us are always great. We would buy K'Nex or Bionicles for about $10. They are great because the kids have to assemble them, then they can do whatever. One son battles with other kids and the other assembled them and then told us they were for show, not play.

I just went to a 10 year old boy's birthday party last weekend, so this is fresh in my head! He got alot of giftcards to Target and Toys R Us ($20 seemed the norm), clothes, video games for his Wii, books (for his interest), and we got him a magazine subscription and a Star Wars lego set (they have them at all sizes and price levels, from $5-$100+.) To be honest, he didn't spend more than a few seconds even looking at anything before opening the next gift...hard age to shop for!! Good luck. :)
