Gift for Lifeguard

Last night my four year son had to be rescued during swim class. He was fine and HOPEFULLY learned a lesson about following rules.

I wanted to get the lifeguard something but have no clue what to get her. She was so cute and kept checking on us after class. In three years of guard she said she never had to save anyone. Leave it to my son to be "that kid."

Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm having a whistle engraved with:

First Save, Alex J., 7-27-11, Thank you!

Thanks for the ideas!

I'll do a card and a letter. The surpervisor was there and checked on us when we were leaving so she already knew what happened. I'll probably get he a Starbucks gift card too.

Sorry, this isn't an answer, but I just wanted to say that my dad saved the same person 27 times at a beach in Australia. Lol. I don't think he got him a gift though. Lol.

a note from your son that says "thanks for saving my life"
plus a nice note from you

and/or a nice metal whistle with an engraving on it, perhaps something like the date or your son's name and 'first save.'

Great idea on the whistle!

I was a lifeguard as a teen. I'll always remember my first save.

I know you are getting her the whistle (SUPER cute idea!!) and the supervisor already knows what happened but I just wanted to add one thing. When you send the card and letter- send it to her at the facility. When I was a guard and swim instructor the guards occasionally got letters thanking them for saves or swim class teaching or other positive things the guards did that touched someone. I got one once and it was so cool to walk into work and see it displayed in the lobby for everyone to see- staff and patrons alike. It made me feel so proud of myself and the job I was doing. Very cool of you to want to recognize her. It'll make her feel so awesome. She will cherish the whistle. Glad your boy is okay!

Oh no! I'm glad he's okay! I would maybe do a little gift card or something like that. A note is a nice idea as well and saying something to her supervisor would really make her feel good, I'm sure.

I agree with grandma t. A little trophy would be so cute. Or one of those visa gift cards too so she can have a favorite meal or something.

That's cute, the engraved whistle. I bet she will love it!

You might want to check with the supervisor first on their policy about their lifeguards being able to accept gifts.

It is possible they she won't be able to accept your gift and that would just be an uncomfortable situation for you both.

No matter what you decide, please send a thank you note to her supervisor. I worked as a life guard as a teen, and having the supervisor know how hard we worked and the great things we did (or thought we did!) was the best reward.

I'd probably also do flowers or a small gift card with a thank you card.

Glad your son is safe!

Good for you for thanking her. I was a lifeguard at a beach during my college summers and out of at least 7 rescues only one parent came back to thank me. Almost thirty years later, I still remember that one thank you. It really bothered me when parents wouldn't thank me or in some cases even denied that I had really saved their child (they weren't nearby or paying attention). I think a nice note or card is sufficient, but I'm sure she will appreciate and treasure the whistle.
