I am starting to plan my son's first birthday. His father and I are trying to decide what we should get him for his birthday gift. He is an active and inquisitive 11 month old now and we hate the idea of spending money on something he won't like or use. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your response. We bought some toy cars (and yes I already have let him play with them and he likes them a lot:) and going to get him a sandbox and or wading pool or something that he can play with outside. It helped to hear what other kids have liked.

We got our daughter a Little Tikes Sand & Sea Play Table. She loved the water side. It took her a little getting used to, but she loves the sand side as well. It was a perfect gift as her bday is in July. Also, she can use it for a LONG time, so I felt it was worth the money.

A lower cost suggestion would be "Fridge Phonics" by Leap Frog. She loves it and now is "singing" her ABC's at 18 months all from this little $20 toy. She only sings about 4 or 5 letters, but she knows the tune and the pitch...it's so cute!

I have an 11 month old son and he loves anything with wheels.
There is a toy car, I think made by V Tech, and it has shapes you put into it. My son played with it at someones house and he loved it. I saw one at Babies R Us for like 17 dollars.
I think I might pick one up.
There are so many great toys, just make sure it's something educational and not a fad.
Brilliant Sky Toys and Book is a great toy store that just opened up on Chandler Blvd and 48th Street in Ahwatukee. I frequent it often.

Have fun shopping.

At 1 years old they don't really know what is going on. My twins turned 1 this past September and we opted to get them a (used, they don't know the difference) 8 in 1 climber for the backyard. We realized that at a year they won't be climbing on it, but only a couple of months down the road they we would. They are 17 months old now and they still love it. it will last until they are about 5. We also ended up buying them a playhouse. I would consider buying a slide or sometime of outside toy, that can be cleaned and brought in the house when the weather gets HOT!

I would suggest anything he can ride. Like a car that he can scoot around the house in or a smaller tricycle. My son received one soon after he turned one and he is still playing with it today and he is over two. We took it outside in the summer and brought it in in the winter and he can ride it all around the house. Actually he has three "cars" one is a tricycle that is still a bit to big for him, the other two are cars but they are different. I can't put any of them away because in one day he rides all tree of them. Also, my son loved his leap pad. He still likes it but now he doesn't want to play with it correctly.... like he will put the book in upside down and refuse to let me fix it. He won't leave the cartridges in for that book so he is playing with one book and has a different cartridge in.. so the pictures and sounds/story don't match. But anyhow... he could spend 15- 30 minutes looking at it with us (until he decided he wanted to do it all by himself- but you know two year olds!)

There are a few things I woul suggest.

A wagon. We love ours and it's great for walks or when we go to the neighborhood pool in the summer.

Anything that might promote walking, especially if he isn't walking yet. Developmental toys are great.

VSmile-it something that he grow with and is educational.

Do you have a backyard? Some sort of playyard that he will start using in the next couple of months would be good too. We gotmy daughter one from costco that we put out only when we are using it. She can crawl through the tubes, and stand up in the middle, and it has a two tents that you can put up too.

Happy birthday, congratulations on the soon-to-be graduate degree and good luck on the new baby!

Fisher-Price makes a fantastic stacking ring set; only the rings to place on the post are colorful light-up stars that each trigger a short melody to play when dropped into place on the post, and it's only about $10! Both of my children LOVED theirs, and we still gift them to cousins and friends' babies at about that age-it is ALWAYS a hit! We purchased our first one at Toys-r-Us but have seen them at Target, Wal-Mart and even Big Lots on occasion. Try to find one-it's a sure thing that he'll LOVE IT! :)
