Toy Ideas for a Two Year Old

My son loves Fisher Price's little people. He has become very imaginative with his play using them. He will even hold conversations between the toys. Not only are there people but they have animals and different cars, trucks, fire trucks and airplanes. Good luck!

It depends on what he likes to do. I wanted my son to have more hands on learning toys for my son's second, like blocks and puzzles, train tracks, and art supplies like play-doh, crayons and finger paint. He loves superheroes and we get him the bug bulky ones, Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc. They make bikes, cars, and boats to go along with these guys. Books are always great. If he like playing video games there is a gaming cosole made for toddlers/kids by V-Tech and LeapFrog.

My 2 year old likes the chunky beads by Melissa and Doug. She is really starting to get into things she can play pretend with such as dolls, but maybe for your son some Little People or something.

I have to recommend books, books, books! I don't know if your family are big readers... We started reading to my kids while I was pregnant, when they were infants, and never stopped (they are 5 & 8 now) They are both excellent readers and LOVE to read anything they can get their hands on. There are some fun books on c.d. as well. Some favorites of ours: How do you make a Rainbow?, any DK book that helps learn numbers, letters, words, seasons, etc - they have a HUGE variety, my son always loved "boy" books - trucks, diggers, dinosaurs, animals, sports... DK also makes some board books that tell about football & baseball & other sports. I love that they provide photographs and you can read as much of the "captions" as the child wants to hear, as they get older they maybe want to hear more of it. Eric Carle books, Max Lucado stories (with a Christian message), Where the Wild Things Are, Dr. Seuss board books... I can't think of any more right now. We go to half price books a lot and to my kids, it's like a toy store. They can learn about anything in the world, or just read a story. My kids' imaginations have thrived as well. Not only do they love to read books - they now love to write their own! It may just spark a life long love of reading and learning! Good luck! And happy birthday to your little guy! My son received the Fisher Price Tuff Rumblin' (or similar name) dump truck for his second birthday and it's still his most favorite toy at alomst three! There's a front end loader that goes with it and it's also a favorite. He was really into (and still is) "role play" type toys. His favorites are his Little Tikes building workbench and tool set (we ordered ours through their website because it was hard to find in stores)and his play kitchen with pots, pans, food, etc. He also loved to "build" with anything--especially Lego Duplos but wooden blocks (ABC and shapes)and waffle blocks were a big hit as well. He loved toys with music and sounds too and Leap Frog makes several for his age range. Last but not least...books, books, books! He might enjoy "interactive" type books like lift the flap or slide and find as well as simple stories or the type with big, realistic pictures of trucks, animals, or whatever he's interested in. when my son turned two his fav toy was his tool set. it had a drill, that was battery operated. he walked around all day with it. i think they sell the set at walmart!

It sometimes even has to "sleep" in this room with him next to his crib.
And he loves his mower. he pretends to mow the lawn almost every day.

I would definitely have to say Legos! We have the Duplo Legos and a Lego table to build on. My kids have been playing with them for years and years, as well as my nieces and nephew! Kids of all ages like to play with legos. Even my grandpa (my kids great grandpa) played Legos with the girls when he came to visit! I would also say, when your little one stops playing with them put them away for a while. When you get them back out again it is like a brand new toy!

Little People are also another great toy. I think that they say ages 1 or 2 and up on most of them. But, if you are having another baby in the future, most of the Little people stuff is big enough that even babies can play with it too (without worrying about choking on small pieces).

I would have to say that Legos and Little people have been our favorite toys for the kids. We have definitely gotten our monies worth out of them. And several kids can play with them at once so when you have extra kids around they can all play together.

My two year old boys have enjoyed the Fisher Price Play Sets...circus, pirate ship, farm, castle, etc. Those have been the best toys we've ever purchased. My oldest is now 5 and still plays with them! They've never broken and they remain the best toys for creative/imaginative play!

Children that age love to role play. So a Dr. Costume, a Vet, a Firefighter, Police Officer, a Grocer. A grocery cart w/play food items is great.

A large cardboard box to make into whatever kind of bldg. one of the above would need...

Also, any type of bldg. stuff. I personally like the cardboard blocks they sell at various stores, usually in toy magazines. Toys that have gears that he can hook together and once he does he can make them turn.

And, a stroller with a doll doesn't hurt either. It certainly will teach him that he can be responsible for a child, it will teach him nurturing, my boys both enjoyed dolls, (husband insisted on boy cabbage patch), but whatever you choose, I'm sure he will have fun with it.

Age appropriate blocks are a hit with my daughter she is 17 months like the larger sized blocks that look like legos. Also tickle me elmo would be fun for him or his first tricycle. on the toys rus website you can search for aged appropriate toys specifying the gender it is pretty neat-

My two year old (now three actually) loved the leap frog fridge alphabet system.....he still plays with it to this day! He puts in a letter and it will tell you the letter and how it is pronounced. Leap Frog makes excellent products for toddlers and kids of all ages.

When my daughter turned two, we got her a sand and water table from Step 2. She still loves to play in it and she's 4. She also got a trike and a wagon.

My son loves his GeoTracks train. It has so many different things you can add to it that it always makes an easy gift for him. Also, it's not too expensive.

For my daughter's 2nd birthday this past December, she got a a talking vacuum cleaner by Playschool and she loves it. She also got a Little Tykes shopping cart and loves that also. I also babysit for another 2 year old and an 20 month old and those 2 toys are also their favorites, which makes it interesting. I also recommend any puzzles or toys by Doug and Melissa. They are so sturdy and bright colored and last forever. Our favorite puzzle is one with various different musical instruments and when you put the puzzle piece in the correct spot it sings old Macdonald had a farm in the instrument sound. There is also a cool fishing puzzle that comes with a magnetic fishing pull to pull out the fish and put them back. That was my 6 year old son's favorite when he was around 2 and he still likes it! Tonka trucks are also something that he will play with now and as he grows.

All the suggestions I have seen are good, but here are a few more. Kids cleaning tools (vacumn, dust buster, broom etc.0 are always big hits. Maybe a play kitchen and you could tell those who ask to buy him food or dishes.

Puzzles are great, and books of course. He would love duplo legos. We really love Melissa and Doug toys. they are made in the US, non-toxic and are good solid wood toys.

We have bought our 2yo daughter the Vtech playstation train and animal set for last years Christmas gift. Along with Imaginarium 100 Pc. Wooden Block Set! Those 2 toys are her favorite and she is always playing with them! Any role play toys ae great for this age as well! Good Luck!

Blocks, and ride on toys were loved by mine and by my grandchildren. A ball pit was a hit for my grandchildren. Larger trucks was loved by my son followed by the smaller versions the older he got. Anything that will make your child use dexterity he will probably be fasinated with.

Velcro foods, fruits & veggies by Melissa & Doug- my daughter still loves these, great for fine motor skills. All of Melissa & Dougs toys are amazing. They have a velcro B-day cake that is fun. Kids can practice cutting and younger kids can pull the stuff apart and stick it back together.

Fisher Price MP3 player, my daughter got this for her 3rd b-day, but I can see a 2 year old enjoying this as well.

Aqua doodle- fun toy

Hi! My daughter just turned 2 in May and we got her a turtle sandbox. She loves it. My Mom also got her one of those little red & yellow cars. I call it a Flintstone car. She really likes that too. She also got a Mr. Potato Head. I know it sounds like that would be a bigger kids toy but she really gets the eyes & ears in the right holes. She really seems to like that too.

The four items I found to be best for my boys (one is now 26 the other 10) were the following: Lego or Duplex (spelling) blocks (the big ones at that age). These are items that last forever! We still have them in the house and if little girls come over they enjoy them as well. Tonka trucks, they have all sizes now and many of them do things like the fire trucks light up and make noise. These items have lasted for years as well. We still have the large dump trunk and earth mover from when my first son was little. He even sat in the dump trunk and rolled around! The musical sound books, or pop-up books. Disney has some and so does Sesame Street. They can learn about colors, numbers, and various other stories and with the sounds they can entertain themselves for hours. You can replace the batteries and many of them are washable. Lastly, the farm sets. They love them. All the different animals etc., and Fisher Price used to have one with jointed animals, fences, the barn, tractor, farmer, etc. Played with it for hours.

Congratulations on your son's 2nd birthday coming up! It's an exciting time, isn't it? My daughter just turned 2 last week, and she had the best time at her party. I hope your son has just as much fun as she did. As for toys, my daughter got a basketball hoop that she adores, as well as a slide. She loves to play outside, so these were wonderful gifts! She loves her new dr's kit and vet kit as well. She got a magnadoodle type toy that she draws on everyday now. Being a girl, she loves her new baby stroller also. Little people, little people, little people!!!!! I agree with the other comments. They are wonderful!. My 7 year old still loves them and they have every different kind you can imagine. Good Luck!

My boy/girl twins love the Step 2 Canyon Road Train Table. It's about $99, and we bought it when the website had a free shipping promotion. We like it b/c it's made in the USA (Ohio!) It may be recommended for 3 and up, but depending on your son he may do well. It comes w/ 3 cars and a wooden train, and other trains and cars (Thomas, Hot Wheels, etc.) work on it. Plus there's a white lid you can put on it to use just as a table for blocks, coloring, Little People (which are also great at 2).

If you have room, it's a great investment esp for playdates.
