Hi mom's. this is probably a silly thing but we don't use our garbage disposal all that much. And it stinks! IT smells like mildew musty smell. We have used a disposal care product that is suppose to get all that nasty stuff out of there, but I kind of think it makes it worse. I have heard that if you put a quarter of a lemon in there that that helps the smell. I was just wondering if anyone has any advice for getting rid of the yuck in there? Or what do you use for the smell (I should say that it only smells when you get right by the sink, it is not all over the house or anything like that thank goodness.) thanks for any advice that you have on this matter!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thank you all so much for all the advice...I tried the ice cubes and that took some of it away, but then I put a quarter of a lemon in it, and it smells great now!!! So thank you so much!

Take the rind from an orange and put it down the garbage disposal while it is running.

the advice I got that worked was to use an old sponge or wash clothe to scrub under the black plastic barrier thing. when I did this to mine the most disgusting gunk came off onto the sponge. after years of using the disposal the bits of food, grease and stuff collected under there and if you are not the first person to use this disposal then maybe it never got cleaned before... to clean I used just a regular liquid dish soap.

you can also dump some baking soda in there to help with the smell.

Throw a lot of ice cubes in there and then run it as usual. You can also use lemons. Good luck!

Lemon, Lime, Orange ~ anything citrus should work.
