I usually ignore requests like that and get a lovely gift that looks like it cost a fortune, but is a real bargain.

$20 if you can afford it.
It is considered poor etiquette to ask outright, it would have been better if they had listed items on a registry (home improvement stores have them) and suggested that people go in together on gifts. But in this economy I guess you have to do what you feel is necessary ; )
$15 - $20 about how much I would spend on a gift+gift wrap. We don't have much to give either.
since this is a good friend, I would try to respect her wishes for a Money
gift. Try to give in cash or check the amount you can comfortably afford.
I try to really pinch my pennies before an affair like this so that we have
more to give. Hope this is helpful.
Really the rule of thumb is the reception. This always sounds crazy but I still use it. Say the reception is 25 a plate, then you should give 75 for a couple. Like one of those park receptions, informal, maybe 50 for a couple.
Yeah you are supposed to be invited to celebrate but somehow it has become pay for your dinner plus a gift.
Don't look at me, I didn't make this up. :p
What you can afford. If they have a problem with that, then they are not really your friends.
Give what you can afford. If you can swing it - $50.

Whatever you can truly afford. Your friend might know your financial situation....
My thing is - you give what you can out of the goodness of your heart...
We asked for cash for our wedding and got anywhere from $5 - $100+. Give whatever you can afford to...the bride and groom will appreciate it. Good luck.
You should give an amount that you are comfortable with. It's a gift not an admission ticket; they shouldn't expect any certain amount.
So tackey!!! did no one ever them that it is rude to ask for money? Give her a small homemade gift if money is tight.
$25 might be OK if you are really broke.
We usually give gifts of about $200 if we are going to the wedding as
a couple.
It's about your budget as much as anything else. So a good amount is one that won't leave you hungry for the week or putting off a bill.
Is this an Asian wedding? I understand that people would think it's tacky to ask for cash, but cash is a tradition in Asian culture. Money brings in more money, luck, etc. This is what is believed. Anyways, basically the amount is all up to you, if you can afford to pay for your meal, then that's great, if not, no biggie. I think having you go to support their marriage is great too, just give what you are comfortable with.
give them a book an wedding ediquete , asking for cash is tacky

tacky tacky tacky. did they really say give cash not gifts or did you ask what they need the most? two different answers there lol. If you asked and they said cash so they can get stuff for the house thats not so bad as saying he don't anyone give gifts we only want your money. A good rule to go by if you can at all afford it is to give at least what they are paying per person for the reception. If you can give more than that then thats great. if not they are your friends they will understand.
I think if a couple has everything that saying they don't really need gifts is okay. I would ask if there is going to be a money tree at the reception and just put some small amount on it. That way they don't know the amount you give but you still get to give what you can. I wouldn't do more than $20 if that is not too much.
My thoughts are why get a bunch of stuff you just have to take back to the store or have a garage sale to get rid of. I think more and more people are living together and truly don't need anything. There aren't many other options other than registering at the local greenhouse or hardware store. Then all the furniture and stuff is a lot more expensive.
