Football at 4? - Burleson,TX

My husband and I are having a disagreement. We both want our son to play football. I think he should start now while he is young (4), while it is touch football and they are easier on the kids. My husband wants to wait until he is 6 so that he gets to play full contact with pads and all. I think that is a bad idea because football is such a big deal around here all the other children he will be playing with at 6 will have already been playing for a couple years. My husband was a lineman in high school and he just wants to see our son running into people I think. I am not sure what to do. should i just put him in? My husband's schedule does have him out of town for days/weeks at a time so it would be my sole responsibility to handle all things football. What do you guys think?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we talked about it some more and I think he realizes now that I truly was trying to get our son into football so he can begin to learn the game now instead of when they play full contact. He is now signed up for flag football with the other 4 year olds and we are all very excited!

While I don't have experience with football and really hope neither of my twin boys want to play it (daddy played baseball from pee-wee to high school so he's really hoping that's where they go), I would think starting him early would help your son in his endurance so that when he is six, he will be used to the physical strength and effort that football obviously requires. I would think any former athlete would buy that argument....

We started my son at 4. He loved it. As long as he gets a good involved coach it will be great for him. Our first coach last fall wasn't very good. Our coach this spring has been awesome. If you are in the area Allen has a great football program.

My son started this spring (he's 6 ) we would have started him sooner, but we just moved here in August from Maine and they didn't offer it Anyway~ He's going to playing tackle this fall. I think the sooner the better, he'll gain knowledge that he can take to tackle. I do most of the running for activities (my husband is in the military) I second Allen! They have a great program!

Starting them in flag football is the ideal situation becasue they have a better chance to learn the fundamentals of the game, and learn that it can be very fun. I have two boys that play football, one for lfag and the other for C team (ages 11-12). I am team mom for the C team. I am also the director of the flag team drill team, so we are very much involved becasue we found a great orginization that loves the kids. (Saints in Mesquite)

However...I dont suggest going behind your husbands back or anything. Try to arrange to have a flag coach talk to him or to talk to parents whose kids started in flag and how much more of a chance these kids have when gettig to learn from the groud up instead of just throwing them out there to start getting hit.
