I am following only those updates from reputable news sources, and if they are just talking about it incessantly, filling air time when we know nothing, then I'm turning them off.
I think endless speculation about suicide, terrorism, hijacking, etc. is totally pointless. We are not experts in aviation, engineering, sea currents, the electronics of the black box, and so on. We don't have access to information - and I don't think we should. Too much info too soon is just misleading.
I live outside of Boston, and my son was 1.5 blocks from the Marathon bombing last April. We heard all kinds of speculation, certain papers (like the NY Post) actually put photos of totally innocent young men on the front page, and there were horrible comments about Muslims and Middle Easterners. This was long before we knew anything and before the city suburbs were shut down in pursuit of the eventual suspects. So a whole lot of people were trying to grab headlines and sell papers - and a lot of lives were damaged. Even so, the agencies were not cooperating as we had hoped, and a lot of pre-event intelligence that might have prevented this didn't get out there because of competition and one-upmanship among law enforcement agencies.
So I really think we have to wait until we know for sure. I am more interested in detailed analysis over time than in what they get out there as quickly as possible. As hard as it is for us who want to know what happened, it's far worse for the families who are waiting and who are harmed by irresponsible speculation or premature reports.
