Hi lades, I am going to have a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) (I might have spelled that wrong!). The woman told me to do a Fleet Enema one hour before... I have never had to do one of those, and I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me how long I'll be affected by it... I read online that it works within 10-15 minutes, but then does it keep working? Will I have a problem when it's time to leave for the test?
I am worried because I had to do a bowel cleansing for a procedure a few months ago, with lots of laxatives, and that was terrible and went on for 12 hours...
I did one right before I had my last baby and it all exploded out super fast and then I was done. Mine didn' t linger and I had to work to keep it in as long as possible because I was ready to explode. Sounds grose, but so true.
I didn't have to have one with my HSG test, but the enema should be fine and painless.
I've had 2 HSG procedures done (2003 & 2007) and I didn't have to do one with either...
I had a procedure in August in which I had to use laxatives and 2 fleets the night before, then a last one an hour before I left in the morning. By then, there wasn't much and I was fine to leave the house. I'd say to just do what they say and if you're a little leaky, wear a pad or sit on a towel in the car but go anyway. You want to get this over with!
Enemas are not laxatives. It makes you go right after you do one, then you're done.
am enema is just a bottle of water with stuff in it you will insert and squeeze. hold it in as long as you possably can preffable over 5 min. Then go potty. you will empty out, but not keep going and going and going. Laxitives and cleansers will cause you to empty your whole system, but an enema just empties out your rectum, not your entire intestines.
The Directions on the box will help you. I had one before each child and one's I went to the bathroom and emptied I was good not more affects from it.
I have had to do a Fleet Enema before for a test. You should be ok. Basically it just washes out what is in you lower intestines but should not give you the continual runs like when they make you clean out by oral meds. If your still worried, go early for your test and use the fleet at the office. I would have to do that anyway if it was me, because it is a 45 minutes drive, park and get in the building to get to the Hospital that I am usually sent to.
it's not like what you take before a colonoscopy, where it "cleans you out" for hours and hours on end. they are probably just wanting to make sure you have a BM just before you come in, you'll probably go to the restroom and be done with it. i've had an HSG and did not have to do an enema beforehand, but i have give my oldest son an enema when he was a toddler, and he just "went" once. hope that helps!
I had an HSG done too and like all the other responses I never had to do an enema. I had my test done in the hospital and the only thing they told me to do was take some Tylenol or Motrin (can't remember which one for sure) an hour before my appointment. I would call the place that is doing the procedure and ask them if it is really necessary? I also checked with one of my girlfriends who also had an HSG procedure and she never had to do an enema either. Good luck!
I had an HSG done last year and I didn't have to do that.
I've also had an HSG and I did not have to enema either. But you should be fine and only go once.
You should only have one toilet session after the enema.
