Fitting 3 Car Seats into a Car

I have a Chevy Impala and 3 kids. My 2 girls are in boosters and my son is still in an infant seat - but not for long. Right now there is barely enough room to buckle seatbelts (I even have seatbelt extensions and they are very difficult to buckle/unbuckle). I am wondering what other people have done in my situation. Soon we will need to purchase a different carseat for my little guy. Is there a specific brand that is more narrow than others? He is currently 6 1/2 months old and weighs 17.5 pounds, so we may have a few more months to come up with a solution. And purchasing a larger vehicle is not an option at this time. Thanks in advance mammas :)

What can I do next?

We have a chevy impala as well...and we do the three carseats in the back too. We have an infant seat...and two 'cosco' front facing carseats. Allthough my daughter (and probably even my son) could be in booster seats...like someone else already mentioned...it's just easier to do the harnesses...it is a tight squeeze in between carseats...It would be kind of tough to get to the seatbelt on a regular basis...but if I just use the carseat buckles...it works fine! Good luck!

what year is your Impala, what are the ages and sizes of your older children, and what seats are they using? The Sunshine Kids Radian is the narrowest convertible seat on the market and good for fitting in 3-across setups, and even though this seems counterintuitive, if either or both of your older children can still fit a harnessed seat, it's actually *easier* to buckle harnessed seats on a day-to-day basis because once you've got them installed, you're buckling in the front of each seat instead of squishing your hand between booster and car seat every single time you need to buckle or unbuckle your kids.

The Successful 3-across thread at car-seat.org could give you some ideas of what might be a good fit for your car (enter "successful 3 across impala" in the "custom search" window and it should pull up threads that have 3-across setups in Impalas), and the folks there are well informed and helpful http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=33226

i would keep your oldest in a booster, but i'd put both of the younger ones in sunshine radian 80s. these seats are designed specifically with the intent of being narrow enough to fit 3 across a standard backseat. if you can install those two to sit pretty close to each other, that will give a little more room for your older one to buckle her actual seat belt. the radian can be used rearfacing as well.

If you get him a toddler seat and not a convertable it shouldnt be as big and bulky, we got both of my kids convertables when they outgrew the infant seat and ended up getting just regular forward facing car seats anyway.

Hi,

Sunshine Radian Carseats tend to be more narrow and they are VERY safe and really top-rated. Also, Recaro. A bit pricey, but well worth it!
