Finding Feces in Odd Places???

I am a single parent of an 8 year old son. I have a question that may be a little gross but, needs to be asked. My son will have an accident in his pants, usually poop or diarrhea and instead of him just cleaning it up he tries to hide it. Example, the other day he was staying the night at my house and he slept in just underwear but, before he laid down I noticed it looked like the underwear he had on was dirty. I told him to turn around and he had poop all crusted in the bottom of his underwear bad (skid marks) and I could see it from the outside. He told me he put toilet paper in his underwear, I told him to change them. It was so bad I had to just throw the underwear out but, the next morning I was trying to move my bathroom rug and it was stuck. So I pull the rug up and what is hidden under the rug...poop!!! I had to throw the rug away. My ex husband and I have found other instances where my son will smear poop on the side of the toilet, my ex also found like 4 turds behind his couch. My question is...is this normal? Will this go away kind of like bed wetting or do I need to take my son to the doctor and make sure that everything is medically okay? Has anyone else had any experiences like this and what was the outcome? I don't know how to get my son to quit and make him understand that this can make somebody sick!! Any help please....??? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I also agree that you need to take him to a doctor. This could be an emotional issue that needs to be figured out. It's not normal behavior. Best of luck to you!

M.,
I have a 9yr. old son and he does not do this. Nor does my 6 and 3yr. old. I would definetly talk to your pediatrician. I have read enough that it sounds like this is an emotional issue. If he wasn't going behind the couch and in places that he could just use the toilet then I would wonder if it was physical and he just couldn't make it. But it sounds like this is intentional and he is struggling somewhere. Good luck and I admire your willingness to get him help.

This does not sound like normal behavior. Take him to a doctor if it is not a medical issue it may be emotional and he might need counseling. Your pediatrictian should be able to head you in the right direction.

Good Luck

It is an emotional/ psychological thing. He is needing some counseling. It comes out in this way. I worked with foster children and a lot of kids with family problems had the same behavior. Get him some help, he can't help it because of all the stuff he is trying to handle. Good luck

Sounds like an attention-getting thing. You should talk to the doctor, but to begin, make him clean up the mess. He's old enough to understand consequences. No matter why he's doing,it - probably to punish you and Dad - he needs to be responsible for the mess!! My son peed in the couch because he was too "into" a video to walk 10 steps to the bathroom. He had to clean up the mess and he lost TV privileges. Children learn from either natural consequences or logical consequences.Good luck!

I don't exactly have an answer for this... but, my friend has a 3 year old son that does the same thing. I don't think he needs counceling at his age but the funny part is he poops in his air conditioner vent in his bedroom... and crumbles up cookies to put on top of it. Even worse he poops in a plastic bag or whatever he can find and strategically places it in his sisters bedroom. This has got to be an attention thing don't you think???
