Finding Affordable Private Health Insurance

I am planning to quit my job and be a SAHM but my husband's insurance is very high to add the kids and me. Does anyone know of a private company that may be more affordable? Also, do they look at your medical history before deciding what you will pay or is it the same for everyone? And if you don't mind, what do you pay for your private policy and how many does it insure? TIA

What can I do next?

I have Unicare for me and my two girls as my husband's insurance is also very expensive. I turned 30 this year so the premium went up but it costs us $260 a month with a $3000 deductible. Of course price goes up or down based on deductible amount. Office visits are a $30 copay and unlimited. Rx are $10 for generic but you have to meet a $300 deductible for name brand, I try to always request generic. Feel free to email me if you have other questions. I wouldn't say it's the best coverage but seems to be the cheapest out there and so far we haven't had too many problems.

Most companies do look at previous/current health conditions when determining an applicant's eligibility for coverage. I have seen a couple of companies advertising on tv that state that previous/current health issues are not a concern. I will try to look for them again this week, and let you know what I find.

You can email me privately at ____@____.com, if you'd like to share your health history, and I can help you figure out what your best course of action is. (I used to work for an HMO, in the non-employer covered group division, and got these questions all the time.)

When considering coverages, you need to consider not only your monthly premium, but also what your out-of-pocket expenses will be should you and your children need to see a doctor, and what your Rx expenses will be.

Check ehealthinsurance.com. I have used this website and have found great health coverage. It will list/detail all plans available in your area along with providing a quote. Of course, if you decide to apply for one of the plans, the health insurance company will ask for some medical history info..

We thought long and hard on private insurance. We decided to go with a bigger, trusted name that costs more but that we can rely on. We use Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas PPO. I have heard horror stories with many of the cheaper, lesser known independent plans.
It is absolutely not cheap but we have never had any issues with them paying bills (except maternity but that is because maternity is NOT included in private insurance in this state--they did pay for the tubal however if that makes sense).
At the moment we are looking into decreasing our premium by upping the deductable and joining an HSA.
I know they look at medical history but I do not know how they judge payments.
