We own our own company and right now it is just myself, hubby and 16 yr old daughter. We pay in the neighborhood of $1125/month which does not include dental or vision.
Dental is a waste if you think about it because it is so expensive and the only perk you get with it is the 2/yr cleanings. if you need actual work, most policies only cover 50% at most for work. We have a great dentist and we opt to go without the dental and if we need any work, we pay his cash discount. He loves it because he does not have to deal with an insurance company and he knows we pay on the spot.
Our medical/health policy itself is basic and our deductible is $15,000/yr which we would never hit. Therefore, everytime we go to the Dr., we pay in full and then the amount is filed for our deductible. The good part of it is that we are fully covered for any expenses such as an accident, sickness, disability, etc. We also pay a side policy for about $100/school year accident only for our daughter because she is a cheerleader and it has perks for student athletes.
Thankfully, we are a healthy family and we have not been out a lot of extra expenses.
In the event that we hire someone, the way our insurance is set up is that we would pay 100% of any employee coverage, pretty nice perk if you ask me.
Insurance costs are crazy!
