Fell on Her Head

Take her in... immediately.

If I had a nickel for every time my now 4 yo female twin has fallen on her head...and I have TILE flooring!!!. I took her to the ER most of the times she fell...

Keep in mind a concussion can show up several hours or a day later..

Here is what they always told me...

1) you do not have to keep them awake anymore (they did not give me an explanation why)...

2) you do need to wake them up every hour or so and make sure they respoind to certain stimuli...

3) there should be no concave marks... Most people worry about huge bumps, but they said this sign of swelling is natural and fine...it's when it sinks in rather that swells out that we should worry...

4) keep a cold pack on any swelling for 10 min at a time to make sure that the swelling doesn't get out of hand...and goes down...

5) if you still have concerns then take to her pediatrician or the ER...

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter fell on her head. After reading your dilema the only thing that came to mind was that actress who hit her head while skiing and felt fine right afterwards but then had a brain hemmorage. I don't mean to scare you but I think that there is something to be learned after what happened to that actress. As a mother I know that you can never be too sure so for your daughter I suggest to take her to a doctor. I wish the very best for the both of you:)

Any head trauma, where the child passes out (doesn't cry immediately if an infant) should be looked at per E.R. triage nurse's advice. Chances are she's fine, but just in case...

YES, you should take her to the ER if you can't get her into her pediatrician TODAY. Anytime you lose consciousness you need to be checked out to make sure there is no internal bleeding or other damage to the brain or skull. Most likely she is fine, but it's better to be safe than sorry!

Any time they pass out they need to be seen asap. They can seem fine, and still have bleeding inside the head. This happened to a friend of mine, and when he was finally convinced to go to the hospital he was told that it was a really good thing he did because there was hemmoraging. With proper care, he was just fine. Good luck!

My doctor always said to not worry about the falls unless they pass out. Since she did pass out, I would at the very least take her to your pedi.

I would definitely have your daughter evaluated by a doctor, especially if she lost consciousness briefly. It's better to be safe. Little ones can't tell you how they're feeling. It could be nothing. It could be a concussion or something more serious that will take a little while to develop symptoms, so please call the doctor. Take care.

YES! If she passed out then you need to get her checked out. Wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry? It may be fine but I'd rather make sure if I were in your position. I hope she feels better!!

Always worry about head trauma! You never know. Especially if she passed out. I would go to the doctor as soon as possible! If there is bleeding in the brain it can be slight you never know. Better safe than sorry!

Yes, by all means. All I can say is do you remember what happened to Natasha Richardson? Little fall on a bunny ski slope cost her her life because she refused medical treatment immediately.

My pediatrician always advised that any loss of consciousness required a trip to the doctor or ER. That was a few years ago, but I think that this is still the rule of thumb.

I would take her right NOW to an urgent care center to have her looked at. She could develop eye problems if she hit her head the right way...so the sooner you get her checked out the better. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

Anytime anyone suffers head trauma and loses consciousness, even for a second, they need to be evaluated. Problems could show up hours or even days later, and the longer it goes, the more difficult it is to treat.

You don't stated when she fell, but because she was "knocked out", you should have taken her to be evaluated. While it may be nothing, the fact that she lost consciousness for a few moments warrants evaluation. Even if it's been a day or so, have the pediatrician check her out.

Yes, have a Chiropractor check her out for spinal neck injury (often missed until other, seemingly unrelated illnesses appear). The brain stem controls the autonomic nervous system; the brain stem goes down into the first vertebra in the neck.

Don't just take her to a pediatrician; they are not trained in the brain, spine, and nervous system like a Chiropractor.

I would go to the doctor just to be safe....right away

You need to take her in and have her examined especially since she was unconscious. This can be a life threatening injury or it can be nothing but a check up with a doctor can make all the difference in the world. I have had several head injuries with no repercussions but Natasha Richardson, the actress, had one which resulted in death so please have your loved one checked out.

I would absolutely take her especially since she passed out. I am an ER nurse and see children all the time who are just fine, but then there are those children who have a problem and act just fine for a couple of days only to need surgery later on. This needs to be caught early. I would take her somewhere that has the ability to do a CT scan.

You should always have a child checked out especially if she passed out or blacked out because even though she played she may still have something going on and it will show up later with an unexspected black out it is always better to be safe than sorry

By the time you read this - I dont know how much time will have passed since your child hit their head- but if it has been anything less than 8 hrs then YES - get child checked out immediately - at an ER so a C Scan can be taken! Head injuries do not always show up immediately. Sometimes a small brain bleeder can occur. Usually these heal themselves, but if they dont self heal, you definately want child in the hospital (Case in point being actress Natasha Richardson). My sister has been an ER nurse and Life Flight nurse for years and she is always reiterating this to me.

Yes! Definitely have her checked out. I am of the school of thought that anyone who passes out for even a couple of seconds needs to be checked out. There is a reason she passed out. Good luck!

Yes, please do. I have a neighbor whose child hit her head while playing "tent" in the house and she began having severe nausea and other symptoms and it was a real wake up call for them. I don't want to be a spoil sport but the public needs to be aware of the issues out there. They discovered a brain tumor which is the leading cause for child deaths, and it would not have been discovered without this bump on the head. Many times they lay dormant (or they are growing and nobody knows because not all tumors have symptoms) until an injury occurs and then it becomes fast moving. So the fall for them was a blessing in disguise. You may also request a CT scan. Most of the time this is not automatically done unless the parent shows concern. I'm sorry and I don't mean to scare you, just inform you. I have a 2 year old grandchild that I watch constantly. You cannot keep them from getting hurt...but just take precautions.

Definetely have her checked out. Especially if she passed out. Not to try to scare you but a teacher my father worked with recently died after hitting her head and she seemed fine and even went to her daughters house for several hours. You should always have head injuries checked out. I'll keep her in my prayers.

After you hit your head you don't suppose to let the person sleep for 8 hours and keep a close eye on them. So I'd say since she passed I'd definately have her looked at. It can be dangerous. My friends daughter has epilepsy now from a blow to the head. Hopefully it will be nothing.

This is a little late but I hope you took her to be looked at. Normally I would think she would be fine; but I recently saw a story about a little girl getting hit on the head and was fine for several days. Then she got a headache and they took her in. She was then rushed to a hospital to have emergency surgery. So now I plan on always taking my kids to be checked if it involves any head injury! You've probably already taking care of this as I am 4 days late in posting my reply!

yes, please get her checked out....if she's only one years old, then her skull isn't completely formed and is vulnerable. I would take her to her doctor and also take her to one who can have x-rays performed and/or MRI.
Just my opinion and/or what I would do if it happened to my baby.

Call your pedi now. She needs to be seen immediately even if she appears to be acting normal. It is always advised to take a child for an evaluation when unconciousness results from a fall. Head injuries can be very dangerous especially when there is no swelling or "knot" present. The absence of swelling or a "knot" could indicate a "reverse swelling" into the brain which can be fatal. The brain is also very fragile and contains many blood vessels and veins; even a minor fall could result in an aneurism (silent bleeding). I don't want to scare you but I think you should be informed. Let us know how she's doing.
