My daughter ran a fever of 102. at school on tuesday. I picked her up from school to realize she was shaking as well. As I drove to the doctors office, she seemed as though she was really weak and out of it. I became scared and decided to take her to the hospital instead. As I was driving (100mph on I-75)to Kennestone hospital she I rolled down the window to keep her awake with the wind blowing on her face. This worked until about 2 miles from the hospital. She finally dosed off maybe less than 3 minutes from the hospital. As we got closer to the hospital I looked back at her and she was having a seizure. I stopped my car and jumped out of the car and grabbed my baby. Ran to the passing cars screaming for help. As I jumped into another ladies car to take me to the hospital my baby stop breathing and started to turn blue. I immediately started performing CPR and mucus came from her nose, she started making this kuk kuk sound and continued to have a seizure as I made it to the emergency room.
Q1. has anyone on the boards experienced this type of seizure with their child? If so has your child experienced multiply episodes and how many within a year or months time?
Q2. When a child has a fever and becomes extremely tired and you are driving what are some practices to use to keep the child up.

I have been told by the doctor this type of seizure does not carry neuro issues, what do you think or know. Your feedback is greatly appreciated

What can I do next?

Hi K.,
I haven't experienced this, but I just wanted to reply and tell you that after I read your story, I am just amazed as to the way you reacted, making fast and sound desicions in such critical moments, I really congratulate you and also I hope that your little daughter is feeling so much better. It must have been so stressful to say the list! and you were very brave. I don't know what else could be done to keep a sick child awake if you are driving, specially on the highway, other than to open the windows and make loud noises.
As far as your other question, like I say, I don't speak by experience, but I would definately make an appointment with a neurologyst, she/he may be able to guide you better also, in what to do if, God forbides, this incident happens again.

I wish you the best!

A.

I have tried to do some research for you and what I have read is that febrile seizures are generally harmless and are a result of the fever going up too fast, not the fever getting too high. These may last one to three minutes. FS generally will occur in the first 24 hours of fever. Only a pediatrician or ER dr. can diagnose this type of seizure.

I prayer this never happens to your daughter again.

I don't what the doc told you but i've always heard that if your fever gets to high then you can have a siezure so i think it could happen again, I would be checking to see why the school didn't give her some meds before you picked her up i would be raising cane about that. thanks

Greetings,

My heart goes out to you and I would like to add that you are a courageous and wise mother. I haven't experienced this with my kids, however, was your child sick the week before (cold, ear infection)? It sounds like she was severely dehydrated. Was she recently vaccinated? Also, did you change anything in your home environment or at the school (new paint, new food, new medication/vitamin, carpet cleaned, etc)? Try taking some extra juice to school for your child. Ask the teacher to keep her hydrated as much as possible. I would sit down with paper and pen and backtrack on a calender each day of the week and try to list everything that happened for that particular day. I keep a record like this for my kids and it really helps. If she was recently vaccinated before attending school, you may want to read up on Dr. Stephane Cave's suggestions on what you can do before and after you vaccinate your children. I hope this helps and things take an upward turn. Just remember, hydrate, hydrate!

Be Well,
S.
