Pumpkin Pie as well as a Cake?
Hot Apple Cider or Cocoa
Ok so I have gotten some good ideas for birthday parties, Now I have another question for all you very creative moms (I am not included in that description). I think I missed the creative thinking class in school. Anyway, we have decided to go with a fall theme. We are doing things with pumpkins and apples and some games to go with it. My son will be 4 and the kids are ranging in age from 3-11. I would also like the adults that attend to involve themselves and have fun as well. Do you know of any foods that can be served that are kid friendly but we can make it into a fall theme. He wants hot dogs. Any and all suggestions are welcome. I only have 4 more days to plan this as it is this saturday. Also we were going to pant pumpkins so each child can take one home with them...is there a paint that works better then another for this? Do markers work? Less the mess....would be great!

I would serve hot dogs, beans, chips, juice boxes and for dessert you could make pumpkin bars and brownies that you make in mini muffin cups. Then you melt 1 can of Creamy Chocolate frosting and frost the mini brownie with that then push down slightly a pumpkin candy(found usually by the candy corn). They look cute and the kids love them.
You can use Tempra Paint for the pumpking painting!
Hi S.,
How fun! I have used acrylic paint for pumpkins, and it works well. You can buy the little bottles in tons of colors at Michaels or Joann's. As for food, I love the sloppy joes idea that someone suggestion. And apple crisp, too! You could also try pigs in a blanket, roasted corn, and apple cider. Happy Birthday!
I am also having my daughter’s birthday this weekend and we are doing a fall theme. We are decorating pumpkins with pipe cleaner, stickers, colored paper, yarn and anything else the kids want to glue to the pumpkins, I wanted to stay way from paint. We will also be bopping for apples, and if the weather cooperates be outside for awhile. I am only serving cake and ice cream, but I am making Carmel apples for the kid to take home with their pumpkins. Hope this helps, I will be watching for other responses to see if anyone has any other fun thing to add.

Foods:
apple crisp, baked apples, apple dippers (sliced fresh apples with caramel), etc. You can probably type in "apples" in recipezaar.com or some of those & get some really yummy ideas. Cooked apples might be easier than fresh because they won't brown. Time of day kind of factors in too - if it's mid-day you can probably get away with snackier type things rather than a meal.
Also, rather than doing fall-specific foods, you could just decorate with fall-type things. Trace your son's hand onto leaf-colored construction paper, use as placecards (if you're seating them somewhere) & write guests' names on them.
Pumpkin painting:
I think this is an awesome idea! The tiny pumpkins are a hit with my soon-to-be 4 year old. He loves 'em! You could try using Sharpie pens - not washable, but probably easier than paint. I don't think a washable marker would work - I think it would smuge off easily.
Good luck!
