Extreme Anxiety at 36 Weeks Pregnant

Does anyone have any input on taking either medication, Lexipro vs Zoloft while pregnant? I am suffering severe anxiety and can not control my emotions right now. I had an appt with the Dr. today and she suggested either of the above Lexipro (I am sure I spelled that wrong) or the Zoloft. She suggested I started taking now so that my body has had time to build up for when baby arrives.

Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have some anxiety problems in general (but don't take medication). When I am pregnant it gets pretty bad. My dr never mentioned anything to me about medication, however he did say that he would refer me to a therapist if it got to the point where I felt I needed help. Perhaps you can talk to someone who specializes in anxiety before turning to medication?

Either way you go, I wish you luck. I know how hard it is!

Yes I know exactly what you mean...Mine got terrible. My doctor did suggest Lexipro while preggie....However, I refused. I was also at 36 weeks. I know that studies suppposedly have been done that these meds are safe while pregnant but I don't buy it. I was cautious...I started seeing a counselor asap and it did wonders until my son was born. I did starting taking the meds the day he was born. No harm to him and it helped me. I bottle fed so yes formula not breastmilk because of the meds. It is up to you about the meds however, to help your anxiety I would see someone asap. It really did help me so I could function. I adjusted to the medication pretty quickly and noticed the difference within a week or two.

I don't know about Lexopro, but I do know that Zoloft is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. While herbal can be a good alternative, they aren't all tested for use during pregnancy, so I would avoid herbal.

I'm 36 weeks too! OK, so I started on Lexapro about a month ago for anxiety...came out of NOWHERE! I can definately tell a difference.

I also was on Zoloft the first pregnancy 3 1/2 years ago for depression and it was great also. I think Lexapro is more for anxiety, but don't quote me on that.

I had a good experience with both...no weird feelings or anything.

Good luck to you!

So sorry you are experiencing this anxiety. I do not know much about either drug, but I do know of a great supplement that has helped many people with depression and anxiety. Many women take it while pregnant and actually use it as their prenatal. Let me know if you are interested in more info about it. God bless you!

Well I am not a proffessional. But I do understand anxiety attacks! I also know that those along with any emotions are heightened during pregnancy. I would suggest taking neither until after nursing. Just take a deep cool breath and relax, I always breath in and out slowly and deeply when I feel any kind of anxiety coming on. I try to tell myself that there is nothing wrong it is just me and it will be over soon. But if you must take something, I suggest doing a little research on some herbal remedies. Best of luck to you.

I am very anti medication while preggo, unless really needed. I also have never had axiety issues so excuse my ignorence, but I would be worried about seperation anxiety, if you are already experiencing anxiety then it migt only get worse and the Dr. is prob. trying to head off extrem separation anxiety.

Good luck I am sorry I was not much help. Just something words for thought.
