Experiences Using Paragard IUD

Hi,

I've decided to try the Paragard IUD and would like to hear other women's experiences using it. I've read forum after forum and most of the posts are horror stories regarding IUD's of any type. So I want to hear from anyone out there with any type of experience on the Paragard (the copper IUD), good or bad. (I tend to believe the women on Mamasource over the woman on the misc forums.)

Any help would be great considering I have to pay up front for the unit and insertion and then my insurance company only reimburses me for part of the insertion. I'd hate to spend $700 without doing as much research as possible.

Thanks for taking the time :)

B.

I got the Paragard in October. I hate it. I have an appointment today to get it checked to see if it's in the wrong spot. If it's not, I'm done with it. My periods have been so heavy I bleed out of a pad and super tampon in an hour for the first 5 days. Periods have been lasting 1-2 weeks - tolerable if I didn't feel like I was going to die from blood loss. Never again. It's nice to know I can't get pregnant, and avoiding the hormones was a must for me, but I hate this. My husband felt it at first but not anymore. Insertion wasn't too bad, and I spotted for about 5 days afterward. I keep hearing how different people respond to it differently, I'm just not one of the good ones!

I had my paraguard for a little over 3 yrs and loved it then I started bleeding heavy for like 9 days had cramps so bad I would curl up in a ball and almost cry and I have a bad muscle condition so my pain tolerance is high. I had it put in about 8 weeks after having our daughter my hubby and I loved it up until dec. 08 I went thru a few months of the horid cramps and having my period more often than not then I asked my doc why it was changing from comfortable to aweful he told me I was having like an allergic reaction to it or something I am telling you this not to scare you but to let you know what can possibly happen after years with it. I went back to brand name ortho tri cyclen and actually feel great on it unlike before I got pregnant so it all worked itself out if you have any questions please feel free to email me at: ____@____.com

Best of luck!

Hi B.,
I had a ParaGard in between my two pregnancies, and I really liked it. I chose it over the Mirena because I didn't want to use any more hormones, and, frankly, it was cheaper than the Mirena. The insertion was uncomfortable but not horrible. Then, I never had to deal with it again until I got it taken out, and removal was very simple.

I never had any excessive bleeding; in fact, my periods were very regular and normal, and I'm someone who has had trouble in the past with heavy periods. I never felt it (neither did my husband, which I've heard is a concern for some people) or thought about it. I would definitely get one again.

I, also, had to pay up front for all of it, and I didn't even know that my insurance company would reimburse me, but I received over half of the expense back from them (nice surprise).

Good luck with your choice!

Hi B.,

I am a SAHM/WAHM - I have the Paraguard IUD. After having the birth of our twins - I was suddenly the mother of a four - 3 under the age of 3 now!! So I wanted reliable birth control. My sister had gotten the Paraguard IUD almost 8 years ago and never had any problems so I decided on it as I did not want any hormone - like the Mirena. My other sister had the Mirena and she really liked that too.

I have had the IUD now for over a year. I have not had any problems with it. The only side effect for me was that my period has become more regular and a little heavier. Nothing crazy! However, my sister's period became lighter. The procedure was simple and not painful - light cramping.

I have never looked back on my decision - having a reliable birth control for 10 years is great!!!

Good luck - I hope this helps.

I have it, like it, no issues. There was an adjustment time where I got cramps worse than usual, but now, about 7 months out all has been normal for awhile. I like not having extra hormones to deal with. I'd recommend it. The insertion of the device is not fun, but it's quick. Good luck.

Used an IUD (not the Paragard)for two years, but they all have some things in common such as cramping heavier bleeding, and sometimes increased risk of infection. After two years of some side effects,i decided that a little tiny nip ahould be the next thing to try. The responsibility does not fall on only one of the partners. Good luck!

After I had my son in 2004 I got the Mirena IUD. I loved it and the only reason I had it removed was to try for another baby. My periods weren't as heavy and I got no cramps at all. I would highly recommend it. Good luck!
